LAURINO

A small city of Art in the heart of Cilento

Laurino lies on top of a rocky hill framed by mountains and where the river Calore flows below in a deep gorge, dug by the force of the water. Situated on the ancient trade route between the Tyrrhenian sea and the inland Lucania, it assumed a vital role in the territory of the upper Valle del Calore, during the Middle Ages. Its isolation was ideal for the Basilian monks, that established here a “laura”, a particular kind of hermitage, from which perhaps the name of the town derives. One of these refuges hosted the hermit Elena, now Patron saint of Laurino. Many are the historic and artistic features: the castle, the local parliament seat, the walls, the chapel and the convents.

The enchanting mountain landscape is the backdrop of the annual “Laurino Jazz Festival”.

For those who love nature, adventure and extreme sports, in Laurino and surrounding areas you can find nature trails on the river banks, canoeing, kayaking and the Zip Line: the thrilling flight experience above the river Calore gorges, at a height of 500 meters hanging from a steel cable.

DURATION  2 hours and 30 minutes

The guided tour includes the convent of Sant’Antonio, the castle ruins, the Annunziata chapel, the Santa Maria Church, and “Laurino in miniatura” the paper masterpiece reproducing the village in miniature, created by the local artist Umberto Miele.
