Castello di Septe

The picturesque Castle of Septe, rises in the territory of Mozzagrogna located on the west bank of the Sangro on a rocky hillock. Among the medieval castles of the area is certainly the most famous and perhaps even the most evocative, given its troubled history that has seen him protagonist.

Built by the Lombards at the end of the 8th century, it was owned by the Counts of Chieti until the Normans conquered the feud. Around the year one thousand, the Theatine counts, to be present in the markets always alive and thriving in the city of Lanciano, used to stay here, not far from the splendid Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, which Count Conrado owes much of his system. In 1259 King Manfred donated its properties to the city of Lanciano. In 1308 Count Philip of Flanders, who in the meantime had married the cousin of Charles I, Catherine of Courtenay - received the castle taking up the old tradition but was driven out by Lanciano for his arrogance and for the castle began a period of decline.

Sold to the private in the seventeenth century in 1721 the baroness Chiara de Osses, being devoid of heirs, decided to donate it to Antonio Genoino, whose descendants lived in the castle until the middle of 1900, when the last of the heirs disappeared under mysterious circumstances during the second World War.

After a careful restoration that took place recently, after which it was declared a National Monument by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the castle is now home to a four-star hotel with 49 rooms, all furnished with taste and refinement, with stylish furniture classic and equipped with every comfort to satisfy even the most demanding guest.
