About Avigliano Umbro

Avigliano Umbro is located at 441 meters above sea level, on a hill surrounded by woods of rare beauty. In 1975 it became an independent municipality, the youngest in Umbria.

Traces of human presence can be found in the municipal area as early as the Neolithic, while the village, situated near the ancient Via Amerina, developed during the Middle Ages, when it became an important centre within the Arnolfe Lands. After the donation of the Arnolfi territory to the Church by Emperor Henry II, it became part of the Todi county.

Today you can admire what is left of the original castle: traces of walls, a mighty cylindrical tower, part of a quadrangular tower and the Porta Vecchia, surmounted by a coat of arms with the eagle, symbol of the city of Todi and under its wings two eagles, representing the subdued cities of Amelia and Terni. The church of SS. Trinità, built in the seventeenth century, contains valuable frescoes attributed to Bartolomeo Barbiani and a very valuable canvas by Polinori: the Madonna del Rosario with Child, Saints and Mysteries. Characteristic is the Liberty-style theatre, built in 1928 thanks to the initiative of a group of citizens from Avigliano: the theatre hosts shows, musical events and conferences.
