Nixy and the Seeds of Doom - A high grade ZX Spectrum game gets a re-release on Itch io

In May of 2019 Florinthedwarf of Indie Retro News did a big review of the ZX Spectrum game Nixy and the Seeds of Doom, in which he said "It was a very fun and addictive game that casual and advanced players should try especially with its beautifully crafted visuals". So why is this game getting a mention yet again on IRN? Well if you didn't get the chance to play this game back then or the more recent C64 version (Nixy the Glade Sprite) which is also of high quality, you'll be pleased to know BUBBLESOFT has re-released the game on itch.

Sonic Origins - A brand new collection that brings you 4 fully remastered Sonic titles coming June 23rd!

Do we have some great retro gaming news for you, as that legendary game character Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog game series, which appeared on multiple systems such as  the the Sega Master System, Sega Megadrive and Sega Game Gear. Will be coming to the Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One and PC as 'Sonic Origins'; a brand new collection that brings you 4 fully remastered titles: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles arriving June 23rd, 2022 from SEGA. To coincide with this news there's a brand new official trailer that has launched viewable below.

Turrican 2 as a work in progress MS-DOS to AMIGA AGA conversion gets another BIG update!

Another great Amiga update through Indie Retro News, as yet again Saberman was kind enough to contact us via Facebook, that Muzza has just released another update for the work in progress MS-DOS to Amiga conversion of the classic action shooter game Turrican II. The second game in the Turrican series, which was originally developed by Factor 5 in the 90's and released on the Amiga, C64, CDTV, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum, and later for DOS.

The Great Giana PETSCII Sisters gets a release on the C64!

We've certainly heard a lot about that famous platformer the Great Giana Sisters from 1987, especially as it came back to the Amiga as a Giana Special Edition by Reimagine Games and then of course the Great Giana-Sisters Construction-Set, whereby you can create your own levels. But this latest release as The Great Giana PETSCII Sisters on the C64 by Vintage Computing Carinthia, is something of a special breed and one you might be interested in checking out!

Strikeback - HOT NEWS as a brand new side scrolling shoot 'em up for the C64 by Sarah Jane Avory gets an early access release!

Another great news story for the C64 community as thanks to the developer who contacted us just recently through Twitter. We have been kindly informed that Sarah Jane Avory's previously announced side scrolling Shoot 'em up of 'Strikeback', has been made available as an Early Access v0.1 version with further improvements being made down the line. To coincide with this news, you can try out the game linked below and experience this work in progress side scrolling shooter in which you need to defend your country against enemy forces!

Lemmings - Deater has released a proof of concept of Lemmings for the Apple II!

Lemmings was a game published by Psygnosis way back in the early 90's for the Amiga, Atari ST and PC and regarded by many as one of the greatest games ever, especially as it featured many blue, green haired Lemmings that could be blown up, ripped apart and dropped from the highest of points before they even hope to reach that exit. So why is that great game getting another mention on IRN? Well as of today if you have an Apple II, you can try out the latest proof of concept of the game which is being developed by Deater!

Bootskell - Another enjoyable multi-system 8bit game appears from Inufuto!

If you have a C64 or any of the other systems mentioned below and looking for another fun game to play through this weekend, then thanks to another heads up from our good friend Saberman, we've been told that Inufuto who is behind games such as ASCEND, has released a new game for the Amstrad, MSX, PC-**, MZ-*, SMC, ZX Spectrum, X1 and now C64 game called 'Bootskell'; A challenging Arcade game in which you need to kill the enemies in each of the many levels by squashing them with blocks.

Creeping Me Out Hex Night - An upcoming Amiga platformer by Mixel gets a much improved demo!

If you loved playing games such as The Addams Family on the Amiga, then you might like this fabulous update, as thanks to the developer contacting us via twitter, we have been informed you can now download the latest improved demo of Mixel's upcoming high quality Amiga platformer of 'Creeping Me Out : Hex Night. A Scorpion Engine created Action/Adventure/Platformer that doesn't just feature complex levels, but a story, enemies and dangerous traps to keep you company.

Forward to the Past Anti Gravity edition is now available for the ZX Spectrum!

Great news ZX Spectrum owners as we've just been told from a good friend of ours and also from a fan of the game that Sloanysoft's action shooter of 'Forward to the Past' has been re-released as a gravity edition for the ZX Spectrum. Yes indeed this game that was released some time ago with very positive feedback from those that have played it, now comes with revised controls making it easier to control Dave and Nates time machine, and also a bonus secret birthday room with a couple of bonus crystals.

QUOD INIT EXIT IIo - The sequel to a colourful C64 game looks better than ever in this new preview tease!

In 2015 we gave a special mention to Retream's Arcade homebrew of ' QUOD INIT EXIT ', a C64 game that had a cute little pig, lots of fast moving fruit and was so colourful you would've been silly not to load it up through a C64 or an emulator called WinVICE. Thankfully it looks as if the team want to continue the piggy greatness, as not only is there a sequel still coming of which we featured previously, but a fabulous video preview has been teased with the words "Work on QUOD INIT EXIT IIo resumed and this video shows the current state of the FORTRESS zone".

Glory Hunters: A unique Game Boy action-adventure RPG that is aiming for a Kickstarter success!

Don't get me wrong I do love a new game for a retro system such as the Amiga or C64, but when it comes to my chunky handheld the Gameboy, it's really feeling a little left out. Sure we've had Gameboy inspired games and Gameboy ROMS through itch io, but actual fresh cartridges is something of a rarity! Thankfully we have BitmapSoft on call to help, as just recently they have announced through Twitter, that they are hoping to publish the latest Gameboy game of Glory Hunters. A unique Game Boy action-adventure RPG by César Arminio that is aiming for a Kickstarter success within 40days of this article!

SkillGrid - A wicked AGA Shoot 'em up for the Commodore Amiga gets a BIG update with a new soundtrack!

Some very late Indie Retro News for you all and one I think you'll agree is rather cool if you have a Commodore Amiga, as we've recently been informed via Andy Hayes, that you can now download the newest version 1.2 of SkillGrid; an endless score-attack vertical shoot 'em up featuring frenetic, tactical gameplay and comprising of a variety of different sub-games, boss battles and sophisticated scoring mechanics.

Dracula - This upcoming ColecoVision game by CollectorVision looks stunning!

While many of you have enjoyed the brilliance of SYDNEY HUNTER by CollectorVision Games, there's another game you should keep an eye on that took us by surprise and that's 'Dracula'. Yes indeed from the same publisher who brought you the Sydney Hunter games, look to be working on a high quality isometric title that they say "is going to be the most ambitious ColecoVision game ever made, without using ANY special hardware". To coincide with this news story, the team behind the game have released some new screenshots!

RetroQuest I & II- A new ZX Spectrum platformer developed by MisterManiac

Another day and another ZX Spectrum game, as we've recently been informed via Saberman in our inbox, that if you head on over to the website linked below, you can download the new ZX Spectrum games of 'RetroQuest' and 'RetroQuest II' by MisterManiac. Although details are short, from what we can tell this is yet another platformer where you collect stuff, avoid the enemies and try not to get killed by just about everything on the screen.

Nebulus - An 8bit classic as a fan-remake for the PICO-8, as well as browser play!

If you have a Pico-8 or wanting to play a rather lovely remake via your browser you might like this news story, as trawling through the itch io page, we've just come across a fan based remake for the Pico-8 called 'Nebulus'. Yes indeed if you remember the 1980's game originally released by Hewson Consultants for systems such as the Amstrad, Amiga, Atari ST, C64 and ZX Spectrum. Will be pleased to know you can play the game as a remake via your browser or through the Pico-8 running at 60fps in the console's undocumented hi-res and hi-color mode thanks to carlc27843: (128x256 resolution with the full 32 color palette, fitting into a single cart (17152+15616 bytes data+lua). 

Prima Dere ZX - An authentic ZX Spectrum game that can be played on a 48k/128k

Another 8bit game has appeared in our inbox, as we've recently been informed through Twitter, that if you're looking for an enjoyable looking game to pass the time on your speccy this week, then make sure to check out AppSir Games latest ZX Spectrum game of 'Prima Dere ZX'; a game in which you play as the hero named Kingsly, and must find the lost cassette tapes scattered throughout the game to win.

Frogger - A Project for the TI99/4A as an Extended Basic development!

In the early 80s, when video games were just starting their migration from the arcades to the living room, it was common for games programmers to take their inspiration from the more popular arcade games, and so we ended up with a million and one variations on Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Frogger. And it's Frogger which is getting a mention today, as if you loved playing that classic game from 1981, B.Gray is developing this arcade classic over to the TI99/4A as an Extended Basic project!

Strikeback - An upcoming side scrolling shoot 'em up for the C64 by Sarah Jane Avory!

Another great news story for the C64 community as trawling through Twitter, we have just found out that Sarah Jane Avory is working on a brand new game for the C64 called 'Strikeback'. Yes indeed from the same person who brought you awesome games such as Soul Force and Briley Witch Chronicles,  will at some point very soon be releasing a side scrolling shooter in which you need to defend your country against enemy forces. 

UnDUNE II - An amazing demake of the classic RTS game DUNE II, re-created in PICO-8 gets an update

I'm sure many of you remember Dune II, an all time classic RTS developed by one of the greatest developers Westwood, which was released for the Amiga, MS-DOS and a later release on the Sega Megadrive in 93. Well if you do remember it and want to relive some of that nostalgia on your Pico-8, then make sure to check out the latest v1.4 update of UnDUNE II by Liquidream; a 3 year development demake of the classic (and original) RTS game DUNE II, re-created from scratch in PICO-8.

ASCEND - Climb to the top, avoid the baddies in this new C64 game!

If you have a C64 or any of the other systems mentioned below and looking for a fun game to play through this week, then thanks to another heads up from our good friend Saberman, we've been told that Inufuto has released a new game for the Amstrad, MSX, PC-**, MZ-*, SMC, ZX Spectrum, X1 and now C64 game of ASCEND; A challenging platformer in which you need to reach the top within the time limit without being killed by Ghoulies and Ghosties!
