Civitavecchia

Overview

A historic port and town to discover

If you happen to be on a boat trip and find yourself inLazio, Civitavecchia is well worth a visit. Here you will find archaeological sites and monuments whose history stretches far back, to Etruscan times.

Not to be missed is Forte Michelangelo and the historic port, which is the centrepoint of life in Civitavecchia. A few steps from the fort is the archaeological museum, housed in an 18th-century building commissioned by Pope Clement XIII. As you walk along the waterfront from the Fort towards Borgo Odescalchi, you will see the Marina and the Pirgo beach area, which overlooks the sea.

You can explore the Taurine Baths or the Traiano Baths, with marblework, mosaics and friezes that will make you feel like you are in ancient Rome! If you really want to soak up the spa waters, indulge in a relaxing afternoon at the Ficoncella Thermal Baths.

Discover the ancient medieval village, which is home to the Church of the Star, the Porta dell'Archetto and the city walls, commissioned by Pope Leo X in Piazza Saffi. Also worth seeing is the Cathedral of St Francis of Assisi and the Church of Death. The historic centre is home to the San Lorenzo market, where the locals go shopping every morning.
