History and culture near Lake Garda
Walking along the streets of Desenzano takes you on a journey through historic buildings and fascinating architecture. A great example of this is the Castle, built in the early Middle Ages on the remains of an ancient Roman castrum. Inside, after exploring the rampart and the gun ports, you reach the panoramic observatory, which offers breath-taking views of Lake Garda.
Another must-see is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena, a late-Brescian Renaissance marvel, which houses renowned 17th-century Venetian paintings.
Then there is the Porto Vecchio, among the most picturesque corners of Desenzano. It is overlooked by Palazzo Todeschini, with its wide arches, which acted as the town hall until the 1970s.
Be sure to check out the Roman Villa, one of the most valuable archaeological treasures in the entire area. Built between the 1st and 4th century AD, it is the most important testimony of the great late-antique villas of northern Italy.
Finally, don’t miss the “Giovanni Rambotti” Archaeological Museum, which houses prehistoric artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age. The main attractions include the world’s oldest wooden plough.
