Ostiglia

Overview

Exploring a Mantuan village by bicycle

Ostiglia is located along the ancient Via Claudia Augusta Padana, overlooking the Po River, in a strategic position exploited by the Romans. This Mantuan village is surrounded by nature trails. Don’t miss the Paludi di Ostiglia Nature Reserve, home to 175 bird species, and the Isola Boschina Nature Reserve, a small island accessible by boat or on foot when the river is dry.

In the centre, you can admire medieval towers and Art Nouveau residences, while the archaeological museum tells the village’s history from Roman times to the 20th century.
The history of Ostiglia is linked to many famous people, including Roman historian Cornelius Nepote, who was born there, and Ermanno, Marquis of Verona, who built the castle of which three towers remain: Campanaria, dell’Orologio and delle Prigioni.

Several cycling routes also pass through here, allowing you to enjoy the area on two wheels. The most beautiful route follows the former Treviso-Ostiglia military railway, built in the 1930s and converted into a cycle path, offering a true greenway through meadows and woods, fields and watercourses, all the way to Vicenza. Ostiglia is also an ideal base for visiting surrounding cities of art, including Verona and Mantua.
