Overview
Village of "Grecia Salentina", today a small town of about 2,400 inhabitants, in 1480 it was the headquarters of the militia under the command of the future King of Naples Alfonso of Aragon when Otranto was under Turkish siege. Its important history, however, has never stopped being told and today it can be glimpsed in the architecture and the characteristic shape of the old town, among narrow streets and elegant palaces. But history is not only that of great events, but also that of everyday life, of the people, of daily work: one can still admire in Sternatia the great 15th-century underground oil mill, recently restored, where the 'trappitari' worked for months without ever rising to the surface. Stories of hard work, of links with the land: signs that we can still read today, and thus hear the past of a land.
