On this page, the Cantos of Paradiso await you as a flipbook. Dante measures space and time to finally penetrate to the essence of our existence and our soul. Just select one of the 33 canti. On the left you will find my color-coded edition of the Italian original in Petrocchi's version, on the right the mildly adapted translation by Charles Eliot Norton. With the arrows on the right and left you can scroll forward or backward in the text.
If you have a desktop computer or laptop (i.e. no mobile phone or tablet), you have further setting options. Below the text is a menu that allows you to zoom in or switch to full view. With the Escape key you return to normal mode. Have fun!
Essentials of Punctuation:
The red markings refer to the Italian pronunciation. The closed é and ó carry an accento acuto ('), the open è and ò an accento grave (`). A pronunciation tendency is additionally represented with a colon under the vowel. Undecided variants contain only the colon.
Voiceless s and z remain unmarked, voiced ṣ and ẓ are indicated by a dot below the consonant. In the case of undecided pronunciation, this is replaced by a colon.
The long and short vowels of the Latin pronunciation are implemented in green. The characters of the Old Occitan appear in purple.
Word compounds (sinalefi) are recognizable by a caret (ʌ), word separations (dialefi) by a superscript v (v). The dieresis or separation of a diphthong contains the usual colon above the vowel (ä ë ï ö ü). A hiatus or vowel separation before an i are marked with a bar |.
The accents are written out to the right of each line. Strong accents are set in bold, weak ones in regular. A parenthesis indicates an optional accent, the slash an exclusive or, the period an inclusive or.
