The first Placemaking Prime Minister!? We're inspired that Singapore's incoming Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, has been a champion of people-first placemaking. Several years ago Lawrence Wong while minister of National Development hosted a #PlaceManagement seminar and opened an exhibit on #placemaking. "Many of us will say it is important to do good place-making and stage experiences. They understand the theory, but wonder how do they go about doing it. That is why we are all here today - to learn - because there is an art, science and skill involved in effective place-making." Lawrence Wong opening up a seminar and workshop on placemaking, that our Ethan Kent keynoted, helping to build capacity for their pilot Business Improvement Districts program. It's disheartening to witness the neglect and disregard for our public spaces. As professional placemakers and passionate citizens, we strongly believe that our streets, parks, and back alleys deserve the same love and care as our own homes. Today, we want to shed light on an issue that affects us all and ignite a call to action for change. Take a moment to reflect on the attached images. They depict seats thrown in the bush, cardboards and rubbish dumped in the back alleys, without mentioning countless cigarette butts littering our streets. As placemakers, it is our duty to create inviting and inclusive environments, but we cannot achieve this alone. We need every citizen to recognize that our streets, parks, and back alleys are essentially extensions of our own bedrooms, living rooms, and corridors. They are the shared spaces where we gather, connect, and build our communities. It's time for us to shift our mindset and start treating our public spaces with the respect and care they deserve. Let's collectively take up the responsibility of nurturing and preserving these spaces. Education is the key. We must engage in dialogue and spread awareness about the importance of maintaining our public spaces. By fostering a sense of ownership and instilling pride in our surroundings, we can inspire positive change.
