I am Protocol Architect The road to salvation must first clear the pathway of perdition. From 2002 to 2007, I worked in a startup called KonaWare. However let me start my story from the beginning. Let us jump back in time. Let us jump to the start of my first job in Silicon Valley. Teetering on the edge between risk and success began on 1997 after my internship in Symantec working in the industry renown product: Visual Café. In 1997 or about three years after Netscape IPO. I sat on the lounge and said to myself, “If I get the job, I will be set for life!”. I sat on the seat all tensed up and nervous. The job interview was a C technical question for which I got it right. Two weeks later, I signed the contract for the first out-of-college job offer. After signing the contract, the rest was history. Walking back to UC Davis to finish up my computer science degree for the remaining one month, I sat in a round-robin fashion amongst 10 students to give a 10 spiel of our job offers after graduation. What I heard next was underwhelming. Low energy response was what I got. There were shame to hide that they—the UC Davis school graduates—were clueless. Most of the students, if I recalled, murmured. They probably were jobless and had to jump from one superficial job to another. I quietly said, “Netscape”. There was a silence and nonchalant response. I calmed myself down. Imagine, I got in to one of the greatest game changer and the biggest tech IPO of its time, and they were non sequitur after my uttering of the word “Netscape”. Jumping back to 2002 when I started my work and a 6 year stint in a startup called KonaWare, I could say, it was another set of life-long experience for which I get to brag about. There, in a tiny office space of Woodside Road in Redwood City, I get to pick the brains of Martin Gronberg. He was the CTO of the KonaWare for two years from 2002 to 2004. Eventually Martin left the company due to financial constraint. He worked in Lockheed Martin and eventually retired in Google as “Senior Member of the Technical Staff”. That was the last of the experience with the great architect of KonaWare and Netscape. I stayed in KonaWare for the remaining 5 years. By 2007, KonaWare imploded. I was among one of the core team to get laid off as they had a fire sale. That means the Engineering team was sold to ServicePower for each engineering head at the price of $30,000/year salary. What I learnt after Martin left KonaWare Lockheed Martin with the remaining 5 years, was a next level of experience. I get to have hands-on experience in dealing with people. That puts another marker in my road to success. In all total 7 years in KonaWare, the experience was priceless As I drive down Redwood City, the Woodside Road that leads to KonaWare reminds me of the good-old times. There will always be a technical blood in me to be the next great architect.
