High school is often remembered for teenage angst and locker slams, but for me, a defining moment came not from a pep rally, but from a dimly lit committee room during AHMUN 2020. Stepping into the shoes of the Chargé d'Affaires, I wasn't just representing a nation; I was the captain of a motley crew, our compass set on navigating the treacherous waters of international diplomacy. Leading wasn't about barking orders. It was about listening, strategizing, and inspiring. It was about forging alliances, weathering disagreements, and ultimately, striving for consensus in a pressure cooker of diverse perspectives. Each debate was a masterclass in critical thinking, demanding quick wit, sharp retorts, and the ability to think on my feet. AHMUN wasn't just about racking up awards (though, secretly, that podium finish did feel pretty sweet!). It was a crucible that forged me into a more empathetic, adaptable, and resourceful individual. I learned the art of negotiation, the power of persuasion, and the importance of compromise. I discovered the intricate dance of diplomacy, where every word carries weight, every gesture speaks volumes. This wasn't just a high school highlight; it was a life lesson. It taught me the value of collaboration, the courage to stand up for my convictions, and the humility to learn from others. It instilled in me a respect for diverse viewpoints and a thirst for understanding the complexities of our world. I can't deny the profound impact it had on me. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone, ignited my passion for global affairs, and equipped me with skills that continue to serve me today. This post is a testament to the transformative power of stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing the challenge. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most valuable lessons are learned not in textbooks, but in the heat of simulated diplomatic battles. 🌍🕊️ Recently attended the 'London University Diplomatic Summit,' an inspiring conference organized by the collaboration of Oxford, UCL, King's College London, and LSE. Explored pressing global issues of Global Health, War and Peace, and Decolonizing Diplomacy. Engaged in thought-provoking discussions, workshops, and panels, led by esteemed experts from diverse fields. The intersectionality of these topics highlighted their interconnectedness and the need for inclusive solutions. The summit showcased the transformative power of collaboration, as scholars, diplomats, and practitioners came together to address global challenges. The emphasis on reimagining diplomatic practices and dismantling colonial legacies resonated deeply, promoting equal representation and fostering innovative thinking. Networking proved invaluable, connecting with passionate individuals from various backgrounds. These new relationships and exchanges of ideas will undoubtedly contribute to personal and career growth, opening doors for impactful collaborations. How do diplomats make decisions in a complex and uncertain world? This is a question that many scholars have tried to answer using rational choice theory. Rational choice theory assumes that diplomats are rational actors who seek to maximize their expected utility in a given situation. However, this assumption ignores the psychological factors that affect decision making, such as emotions, biases, heuristics, and social influences. Leaders are not isolated individuals who make decisions on their own; they consult with others, such as trusted career diplomats, and they are influenced by public opinion. Moreover, some leaders may exclude dissenting voices from their inner circles of advisors, leading to groupthink and confirmation bias. It’s time to pass the torch of opportunity — We’ve almost wrapped up our U.S. Global Leadership Coalition’s Next Gen Global Leaders Network Class of 2023 program (completion in December). As someone who believes in the importance of America’s global leadership, development, diplomacy, and foreign assistance programs to help prevent and address very complex challenges facing our world — from national security, environmental changes impacting global resources such as food, water, and energy security, to how the U.S. can both compete and nurture economic growth & the needs for private-public partnerships for global scale impact. This year I’ve learned a great deal from experts around the globe on topics critical to business, international affairs, and humanity — From deep sessions on foreign aid, policy, and national security to save lives and strengthen our economy, to why global leadership matters at the local and national levels and how we can build our advocacy skills through strategic communication and compelling storytelling. Perhaps the best part of the program was being able to attend the Global Impact Forum this past June in Washington D.C., surrounded by outstanding leaders in multiple fields, and to meet with state leaders and policymakers on State Leaders Capitol Hill Day — and yes, we were able to ride the Senate Subway under the U.S. Capitol. After program completion and graduation this December, I’ll join the USGLC State Advisory Committee for Texas.
