Life in Canary Wharf: Why It is London's Best Neighbourhood

Canary Wharf is more than a neighbourhood in London. It is a thriving business and residential district with a striking skyline and a vibrant atmosphere. Such is the unique lifestyle of this locality that it has gained recognition as one of the city's finest. However, despite its merits, it may not be picture-perfect for everyone. As a Canary Wharf resident, I would like to share my first-hand experiences living in this district.

The History of Canary Wharf

On 22nd August 1802, a series of docks were opened on the Isle of Dogs, a large peninsula bounded by the River Thames in East London. Primarily developed by Robert Milligan, a wealthy ship owner and merchant of the time, these docks were known as the West India Docks and were the home of the West India Dock Company.

From the 1800s until the mid-1900s, this area was a centre of commerce and thriving and the busiest port in the world. However, with the containerisation of cargo in the 1960s, the industry saw a decline resulting in the closure of the docks in 1980.

Despite the end of the port industry, redevelopment was initiated to turn these defunct docks into a business district. Over the decades, this part of East London has grown to become a leading financial centre in the United Kingdom and home to a collection of well-known high-rise buildings. As of 2023, Canary Wharf has five of the top ten tallest buildings in the UK.

Canary Wharf is now in the hands of the Canary Wharf Group (CWG), an international consortium of investors headquartered in London. Interestingly, every public space within this district, from the squares to the famous plaza outside the Jubilee line, is designated as privately owned, thus run with outstanding management and extremely well maintained.

Amenities in Canary Wharf

As a global finance and business centre, Canary Wharf is the headquarters of many major banks, financial institutions, and multinational corporations, thus creating a dynamic working environment with ample job opportunities. For career-driven individuals, this is the place to be.

Supporting this cosmopolitan landscape is an extensive transportation network linking all of Canary Wharf within London and beyond. The newly opened Elizabeth Line is one of the best transport links to central London. Also, there is the Jubilee Line underground station, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), various bus services, and close proximity to the city airport.

Other amenities range from high-end retail outlets and artisanal shops to restaurants. Still, I will say these are more catered to business professionals. Those looking to retire or settle with their families may find these lacking.

Green Urban Environment

Despite its urban setting, Canary Wharf embraces its natural beauty with numerous beautifully landscaped public spaces, outdoor recreational areas, and picturesque waterfront parks along the River Thames. Some of my favorite areas include Greenwich Park, Canada Square Park, Jubilee Park, Thames Barrier Park, and the Royal Victoria Docks.

These outdoor areas are also the perfect backdrop to Canary Wharf's booming cultural and artistic scene. Throughout the year, there are a variety of markets, festivals, and art exhibitions that showcase visual arts, such as music and theatre. For instance, the Crossrail Place Roof Garden combines horticulture with public art, offering a unique and immersive experience where you can explore the interesting blooms of the season.

The Canary Wharf Community

More than the urbanism of this area, what truly stands out to me is the strong sense of community I have found here. Yes, Canary Wharf is technically a business district, but there are residential developments and communal spaces which invite residents to connect and socialise. However, many are high-rise building options that may not be ideal for those looking for more diverse options, such as houses or lower-rise apartments.

Despite the limited housing options, Canary Wharf is one of London's safest and most secure areas, not just in terms of law enforcement. Many residential complexes have dedicated security and 24-hour concierge services that are well-trained and dedicated to serving residents.

Conclusion

With stunning modern architecture, Canary Wharf offers the perfect place for those looking for urban sophistication. However, it is important to remember that it is a business district. Therefore, living here is comparatively more expensive than other parts of the city. Additionally, with its modern façade, you will not find the historical aesthetic seen in other parts of the city, but that is neither a pro nor con. Rather it is a matter of personal preference.

My experience living here has been fulfilling, as it suits my lifestyle and career needs. For those in similar circumstances, Canary Wharf may provide the same benefits, thus making it worth exploring. From my perspective, this district is indeed one of the city's best in the heart of London.

Great place with clean vibes
