Actress Ellen Page came out as gay in a moving speech at Friday's Human Rights Campaign conference in Las Vegas.
"And I am here today because I am gay," Page said, drawing extended applause. "And because maybe I can make a difference, to help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility."
"I also do it selfishly, because I'm tired of hiding, and I am tired of lying by omission," Page continued. "I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."
The actress, who starred in such films as "Inception" and "Juno," appeared to receive a standing ovation after she announced she was gay. She spoke at HRC's inaugural "Time to Thrive" conference, which is focused on "promoting safety, inclusion and well-being for LGBTQ youth."
