Borghese Gallery is located inside one of the most famous villas in Rome, Villa Borghese.
Today Borghese Gallery is one of the most fascinating museums in Italy and attracts millions of visitors every year.
At the beginning of the 1600s, the Borghese family decided to buy land in the north of Rome. As soon as the Borghese family acquired notoriety in the Roman aristocracy they decided to build a villa inside the park of Villa Borghese.
Since the construction of the villa, the structure was designed to be a place dedicated to art and culture.
In fact, in 1902 the museum of Borghese Gallery was inaugurated inside the villa, a museum that houses important collections by Bernini, Caravaggio, Raffaello and many other important artists.
Temporary exhibitions are often set up inside the museum to accommodate works by important artists. The cost of these exhibitions depends on the museum administration and is a mandatory supplement to be paid together with the entrance ticket.
The main works of art of Borghese Gallery
The Borghese Gallery consists in a total of 20 rooms divided between the ground floor and the first floor. Inside there are works of art of the highest value that give Borghese Gallery an unparalleled majesty.
First of all, we need to mention one of the best-known masterpieces preserved inside the Galleria Borghese: the statue representing Paolina Bonaparte Borghese. The sculpture is the work of the great Antonio Canova who wishes to represent Pauline as a winning Venus, associated with the ideal of beauty.
Paolina Borghese is the protagonist of a room dedicated to important sculptural works. It is located in the centre of the room to ensure that it can be admired from every angle, as wanted by Antonio Canova.
Still in the Borghese Gallery, proceeding along the exhibition route, it is also possible to admire Apollo and Daphne, a Baroque sculpture made by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The sculpture reflects the characteristic of Bernini's statues, that is the movement and dynamism of the subjects represented. For both characters in fact, it is possible to realize that they are running and this is most noticeable by the tension of the muscles of Apollo. The attention that Bernini dedicates to the details allows the viewer to be fully involved in the action.
The paintings exposed in the Borghese gallery by Tiziano and Caravaggio are also very important.
Amor sacro Amor profano is one of the most famous paintings of Tiziano inside the Psiche Room, the room dedicated to the great Venetian artists. Among the most important paintings of Caravaggio we can find David with the Head of Goliath and the Young Sick Bacchus.
In addition to these works of art we also find some works among the main artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries such as Raphael, Bronzino and Domenichino.
The project of the ten expositions
Inside Borghese Gallery there are the works of the main important artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Lots of these works cannot be moved from their location, as they are too delicate, too big or too fragile to be moved.
It is therefore impossible to transfer them when monographic temporary exhibitions occur about the artistic production of these famous artists.
For this reason, it was created a project that aim to organize ten major monographic exhibitions inside Borghese Gallery during ten years, in order to deepen the knowledge of the individual authors, thanks to some loans from the major museum institutions.
The first exhibition, dedicated to Raphael, was staged in 2006. After 2015, Canova and Bernini alternated.

Galleria Borghese is in Piazza Scipione Borghese.
The Villa Borghese area can be easily reached with public transportation.
How to reserve the tickets for Borghese Gallery
Reservation for Galleria Borghese is mandatory as there is a maximum number of people that the Gallery can hold at the same time. To visit the Galleria Borghese there are various possibilities.
As a first possibility you can purchase simple entrance tickets for Borghese Gallery. There is the availability of entrance in time slots from 9am to 5pm with entry every two hours. The visit lasts 2 hours. After the time has elapsed, you will be taken outside to let people in the next time slot enter. This type of ticket only includes the skip the line; once you enter you are free to visit the museum on your own.
If you want an audio guide, you can rent them once inside the gallery if available at that time.
The second possibility is that of a group guided tour. This possibility is for those who want to have an official guide who explains the most important works. The tour lasts about 2 hours, after this deadline you will be invited to go out to access visitors of the next time slot. The bookable time slots are every two hours from 9am to 5pm.
Last but not least, there is the possibility to book a tour with a private guide. The advantage of this type of tour is a guide reserved only for you. The visit lasts about 2 hours and 30, with the introduction of the Villa from the outside and then inside Borghese Gallery. The visit can be customized according to your interests. Also in this case the reservation is available from 9am to 5pm with access every two hours.
When is the entrance to the Borghese Gallery free?
The Borghese Gallery, being a state museum, has free admission every first Sunday of the month, subject to exceptions. In this case, the reservation must be made directly with the museum.
In what times can Borghese Gallery be visited?
Borghese Gallery is open every day except on Mondays from 09am to 7pm (last entrance at 5pm). It is extraordinarily open on Easter Monday. Borghese Gallery is closed for Christmas and for New Year’s Day.
