John Riggins was among the zaniest and strangest people to ever play in the NFL. A Hall of Fame running back, Riggins’ finest moment as a player came in Super Bowl XVII, in January 1983, when he ran for 166 yards and won the game’s MVP as his Redskins beat Miami, 27-17. Riggins, who earlier in his career had worn a Mohawk while playing for the Jets, was known as “Diesel” due to his powerful running style – and in his mid-30s with Washington, he led the NFL with 24 rushing TDs in 1983. His peculiar behavior included once living in a storage shed; wearing an outfit to a Super Bowl party consisting of a top hat, tuxedo, and cane. Then once during a black tie event in a Washington D.C. hotel ballroom, Riggins told Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, with whom he was sitting at a table, to “loosen up, Sandy baby.” Riggins, who wore cowboys boots to that event, later passed out on the floor and snored through a speech by Vice President George Bush.
