Known locally as Calcio storico (historic football), Calcio fiorentino dates back to the 14th century and is an original mix of football, rugby, wrestling and boxing.

Every June, teams from the 4 historic districts of Florence compete against one another, each represented by a colour: Santo Spirito (white), Santa Maria Novella (red), San Giovanni (green), Santa Croce (blue). The final game takes place on the 24th of June, San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist)'s Day, the patron saint of Florence.

Santo Spirito is undoubtedly the district most involved into the celebrations. It glows white and flags and banners are hung from windows, not to mention the high participation rate from its residents.
