UP Manila adds another extraordinary distinction to its list of accomplishments this year.
On August 3, 2022, during UP Manila's 113th Commencement Exercises, Joanne Veronica O. Arcilla was formally recognized as the university's first BS Computer Science summa cum laude.
With a general weighted average of 1.1768 and a major in statistical computing, Joanne earned the highest academic distinction awarded to a qualified graduate.
The highest grade a student may receive in the UP grading system is 1.0, often known as "uno."
Joanne took to Facebook to share the exciting news with her friends and loved ones.
She wrote, "Four years in UP Manila's BSCS program challenged me, my priorities, and my capabilities to the core but happy to finish this chapter of my life with a great add-on!
"To my mom & dad Jovi and Jun, my ever-maldita sister Joselle, my life constants Patricia, Trinity, Ondrea, my thesis/SP adviser Sir Richard Bryann, my college parents Millany and Wesley, and my friends both within and outside UPM:
"I cannot find enough words to thank you all for the endless support and guidance you have given me throughout my undergrad journey. Let me share this success - along with the tears shed, the late nights spent, the "gumagana 'tong code kanina", "andyan na si Sir?", "pahingi ng samplex hehe" moments, and all the other priceless F2F and online memories gathered - with you. Kayo ang mga summa ng buhay ko!
Joanne continued, "At siyempre, maraming salamat UP! Hanggang sa muli.
"This is Jo, your laging-late-at-antuking-freshie turned UPM Comsci's first Summa, finally crossing the finish line."
Among her shared posts include congratulatory tributes from the Office of the College Secretary of UP Manila’s College of Arts and Sciences, her university organization UP Society of Computer Scientists, and her high school alma mater St. Scholastica's College-Manila.
