Image Credit: Wrights Media “Hybrid work” was the name of the game at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show (shortened to CES), both as the focus of tech aimed at muddling your home-office balance, and in the way we covered the show itself (virtually, from home). While the halls were, anecdotally, a bit of a ghost town in 2022, tech companies were ready for an ambitious return-to-force, once again strutting their stuff in-person at CES 2023.
We were back in town too, attending grand activations and product demos, and witnessed a convention resolutely ready to move into a “post-pandemic” future. In so many ways, CES was much of the same as before the pandemic — a flurry of press conferences, booth tours (and plenty of Hyperloop rides around the Las Vegas Convention Center).
But from economic inflation, to material shortages, the past three years have had a palpable impact on the world’s biggest tech companies. Announcements this year focused mostly on improvements to existing flagship products, or bold, conceptual designs in lieu of ready-for-market releases. Still, we were still surprised and delighted by some key product innovations, and found 30 gadgets deserving of our “Best Of CES 2023” award.

LG Wireless M3 97-inch OLED TV
Image Credit: LG It’s not CES without a barrage of flashy TV releases, but this was a decidedly odd year — Sony abstained from any new TV announcements to focus on their new electric car collab with Honda, less companies seem to be jumping on the 8K bandwagon (potentially signaling the death of this trend), and Roku threw a respectable hat in the ring for the first time.
While LG did feature a stunning (experimental) transparent TV, one subtle, yet impressive tweak made to a previous model proves why they’re still best-in-class — they simply cut the wires. LG’s OLED M3 is the first TV that supports “Zero Connect” wireless connectivity, showing that less really is more. An external box houses all the HDMI connections and media players you need, and it beams 4K 120Hz video straight to the screen from up to 30 feet away.
This solid, key update delivers all world class picture quality you’ve come to expect from LG without compromising resolution, color, or gaming performance. Bluetooth beware.

ASUS ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED
A “3D laptop” where images pop out of the screen without ever needing to wear glasses might seem straight out of The Jetsons, but it very much exists, and is ASUS’ vision of a more dynamic, immersive future of work made reality.
The ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED uses a proprietary tech called “Spatial Vision”, using a lenticular, eye-tracking camera lens to track your head movements and make the images seem to pop off the display, sans-glasses (an effect helped by the screen’s multiple layers). The 16-inch display can switch between 2D and 3D viewing, and images are smooth and crisp, regardless of the number of dimensions, thanks to the 3.2K OLED quality and 120Hz refresh rate.
While you might not feel the need to make the cells on your Excel worksheets jump out, for graphic artists and architects who have to think and work in a 3D space, ASUS’s ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED makes designing digitally a visual reality.

JBL Tour Pro 2
Image Credit: JBL While everyone was buzzing about Apple finally adding volume controls and extra functionality to the stems of their 2nd generation AirPods Pro last year, JBL latest wireless earbuds make the charging case the real star of the show.
The JBL Tour Pro 2 features a 1.45-inch touchscreen that makes your listening experience smarter, not harder, with a display that lets you adjust the volume of your music, change the EQ, and even switch between noise cancellation modes. As an added bonus, the case also functions like an audio-minded smartwatch, sending you messaging push notifications from your smartphone. Yes, but how do the earbuds sound? Well-balanced, with up to 40 hours of playback and support for spatial audio.
Adding screens to everything isn’t always a recipe for success, but JBL’s impressive case improvements combined with high-end sound quality makes them stand out from the crowd.

Samsung SmartThings Station
Image Credit: Samsung Samsung undoubtably dominated the smart home conversation at this year’s CES, leaning into the new “Matter” ecosystem, a way of cohesively bundling compatability between a network of smart appliances, phones, TVs — pretty much everything. However their most impactful innovation proved to be the easiest way to automate your daily routine, and all at your fingertips, no less.
Samsung’s compact SmartThings Station is like the Swiss Army knife of smart home hubs, able to connect to all Matter-compatible gadgets with the touch of a button. Working with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and Zigbee, you can use the SmartThings app to create presets for connected appliances in your home. By pressing, long-pressing, and double-pressing the button, you can change your lighting, set alarms, and even make your phone ring if you misplace it somewhere in the house.
To top it all off? The SmartThings Station doubles as a 15W wireless fast-charging station, and sends you a notification when your device is fully charged. Forgoing all the bells and whistles, Samung’s SmartThings Station is a masterclass in smart design.

TCL RayNeo X2 AR Glasses
Image Credit: TCL TCL joined the wearable tech race last year, creating AR smart glasses fit to compete with Meta or Apple. This year, they’re taking another huge step forward with the RayNeo X2 glasses, which represent a future with AR that feels seamlessly integrated with everyday life.
They look and feel a lot like similar pairs of chunky AR specs (Nreal Air specifically), but instead of stuffing them with superfluous tech, their few key features feel practical and, at times, wow-worthy. They’re fitted with Micro-LED optical waveguide displays that give you a personal display without a restrictive view, meaning you don’t have to take them off to move around (great if you’re using their pop-up navigational tools). The imaging is surprisingly crisp, there’s photo-taking capabiltiies, and you can even listen to music through the arm of the frame.
But what truly impressed us was their real-time translation mode, which adds translated subtitles to the bottom of your vision as you have a conversation with someone. It can even pick up on, and translate, conversations happening nearby around you.
RayNeo X2 glasses are the best argument for AR glasses’ eventual ubiquity, no longer just for those looking to push the boundaries of tech.

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i
Image Credit: Lenovo We’ve seen enough foldable laptops and smartphones for one lifetime, but what about laptop that stacks and twists? Lenovo’s new Yoga Book 9i lets you work in more ways than you can possibly think of, with remarkable functionality making the absolute most out of dual displays.
One of the strongest laptop showings at CES 2023, you’ll get a lot of flexibility out of the two 13.3-inch 2.8K OLED displays attached with a hinged, 360-degree soundbar. Use the dual screens vertically or horizontally with separate displays (windows can move between the two), or, with a single 13.3-inch screen, bring up a full haptic keyboard on the bottom display.
With the Lenovo integrated active pen you can take notes on one screen while in a video conference on another, or search for art references while you design on a different display. Combining the portability of foldable laptops, with the versatility of dual screens, it’s truly a hybrid worker’s dream.

Ring Car Cam
Image Credit: Ring Ring is stepping out of the home, with a new security camera that gives you an extra set of eyes when you’re on the road. Just mount the dual-camera Ring Car Cam onto your car’s dashboard, plug it into the OBD-II port, and it’ll record not only inside your car, but capture motion-activated footage outside your vehicle (even when it’s in motion).
Like an on-demand dash cam, you can activate the camera with quick voice commands, too. Say “Alexa, record,” and the camera will start recording footage, which is extremely useful if someone’s just rear-ended you, or if you’ve been pulled over for a traffic stop. Clips are stored locally, and once you’re near you’re home’s Wi-Fi, it will upload the footage and send out alerts (all end-to-end ecrypted, if privacy’s a concern). From there, you can check the footage right from the Ring app.
While adding more cameras won’t help prevent accidents, for added peace of mind when you hit the road, the Ring Car Cam deserves a front seat in your car.

GE Profile Smart Mixer

We love that GE Profile’s innovative 7-quart stand mixer considered every aspect of the baking process here. The mixer’s standout feature is its built-in scale, which lets you conveniently measure wet and dry ingredients right from the bowl itself. It also takes into account texture and consistency, sensing when mixing is complete (which can stop you from tragically overwhipping fragile batters).
In a win for kitchen multi-taskers, the mixer is also fully compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, letting you change speeds or stop mixing if your hands are too sticky to do it yourself (guilty). If you’re not sure where to start, the GE Profile app comes with dozens of integrated recipes for you to try with the mixer. It’s just masterful kitchen engineering, with helpful features we can’t believe haven’t been done before.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50xSTS
Image Credit: Audio-Technica Gaming headsets have been a must-have accessory for the past few years, but advancements in sound quality have only made them more appealing for those who want to make their own content. That’s why Audio-Technica has officially entered the ring, adapting their studio-quality wired headphones into a livestreamer’s best companion.
The ATH-M50xSTS StreamSet was built off the iconic M50x professional monitor headphones, with an added boom microphone that makes them a prime headset for streaming. The headphones come with a 3.5mm headphone input, a 1/4-inch adapter, and a 3-pin XLR if you want to connect the mic to a mixer.
What we like: Audio-Technica didn’t sacrifice on sound quality for the sake of design, using the same 45mm drivers as the M50x, which gives them accurate sound reproduction and a wide frequency response. The mic was also incorporated from their 20 Series, which accurately captures vocals and reduces background noise considerably. Bottom line, ATH-M50xSTS StreamSet is legacy audio engineering adpated for the modern creator.

HTC Vive XR Elite
Image Credit: HTC HTC’s Vive XR Elite is a true revelation in VR tech, taking the best in mixed-reality capabilities and steamling them into a sleek, portable package.
Specs, of course, are important, and the HTC Vive XR Elite goes toe to toe with the Meta Quest Pro here, thanks to Qualcomm’s ubiquitous Snapdragon XR2 chip. But it takes it a step up with an impressive 110-degree field of view, 2K resolution per eye with a 90Hz refresh rate, and full standalone operation.
But comfort is king when it comes to the VR/AR experience, and its compact, lightweight feel creates that immersive environment other developers have been chasing. It’s less than half the weight of the Quest Pro, with a rear battery that gives it nearly two hours of life. You won’t get complex eye or facial-tracking here, but full-color passthrough support creates a truly in-depth experience.
For a more lightweight, endlessly wearble way to experience VR/AR, the HTC Vive XR Elite can’t be beat.

Withings U-Scan

Enter Withings’ U-Scan, an eye-catching toilet sensor that reads your pee and delivers you valuable biometric insights. Yes, you have to pee on this gadget.
The puck-shaped device analyizes your urine daily, and can detect your pH balance, check carbohydrates and hydration levels, and see if you’re low on essential vitamins. For people looking to get pregant or track their menstrual cycle, it even analysizes your hormones. A low-energy radar sensor even detects who exactly is peeing (if everyone in your home is looking to track that kind of thing).
But this isn’t just a barrage of information — the integrated U-Scan app gives advice for your daily routine if you’ve been feeling off, such as tweaking your nutrition and water intake. Withings U-Scan helps you take simple, actionable steps to feel more in control of your body, all by being WebMD for your pee.

Victrola Stream Onyx
Image Credit: Victrola Victrola’s follow-up to its Stream Carbon turntable is a solid, affordable entry into the Sonos ecosystem for vinyl-lovers looking to go wireless with their audio setup.
Like the previous Stream Carbon model, the Stream Onyx is only the second turntable so far to be certified for Works With Sonos. Visually they share plenty of similarities (including the much-beloved volume-control knob), and it’s just as easy to wirelessly stream your vinyl to your Sonos soundbar or speakers. The main difference is how Victrola tweaked the Stream Onyx to give you all the same functionality in a budget-friendly package.
The Steam Onyx is made with a “low-resonance” MDF plinth and molded plastic materials. The tonearm is aluminum, rather than carbon fiber, and has an incredibly easy-to-set-up counterweight system. Sometimes the simplest tweaks are where the magic happens, combining analog audio with the convenience of wireless streaming.

Roborock S8 Pro Ultra

Their latest flagship robo vac, the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, has all the trappings of previous models, from LiDAR navigation and smart object detection, to automatic mop-lifting technology while going across carpets. But what really makes the S8 MaxV Ultra stand out is actually quite simple — a second rubber brush. While it might not seem like it, this enhances dirt-pick up immensely and avoids tangling, with 6,000pa suction going beyond what most Roombas can do.
The S8 Pro Ultra also has a new dock system which also self-cleans and dries the robot’s mop, so you won’t have to worry about mold growth. We doubt that any robot cleaner can come close to the sheer level of human-free deep-cleaning you’ll get out of Roborock’s S8 Pro Ultra right now.

Razer Edge
Image Credit: Razer Razer is the best iteration of handheld gaming devices since the Nintendo Switch, a high-performance powerhouse that delivers a decidedly console-like experience in the palm of your hands.
The new console packs a powerful Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 chipset, as well as an ultra-fast Wi-Fi 6E version, and a 5G version that supports both sub-6Ghz and mmWav for on-the-gaming. It also comes with 8GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, which combined with Kishi V2 Pro’s intuitive haptics controller, makes the whole experience feel top notch. But beyond specs, the bread and butter of a good cloud gaming system comes down to a low latency connectivity and a solid screen, and the Razer Edge checks all our boxes here.
The Edge’s OLED screen impressed, with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 and a 144Hz refresh rate that makes games like Dead Cells feel sharp and responsive. There’s almost no lag on everything native Android games, to games from apps like GeForce Now and Xbox Game Pass. While we wish the battery life was better at its pricepoint (around 6.5 hours outside the cloud), the Razer Edge still looks and feels like the best cloud gaming has to offer to date.

Citizen CZ Smart Watch
Image Credit: Citizen We’ve all seen smartwatches and fitness trackers that record your heart rate and blood oxygyen levels (yawn), but Citizen’s latest CZ Smart Watch goes above and beyond, giving you targeted “power fixes” so you can be your best self all day long.
The key here is the integrated YouQ app, which combines Nasa research with IBM Watson’s machine intelligence platform so you can monitor your health habits throughout the week, and even get a sense of how your body might feel tomorrow. The watch’s sensors track your sleep and heart rate to establish a baseline, and then you take a gamified alertness test throughout the day so the app can determine your chronotype — basically, what time of day you’re most productive (night owl over here, for example). If you’re feeling fatigued or less alert than usual, the app will offer specific suggestions on how to perk you up, like drinking a cup of coffee, or moving around more.
The CZ Smart Watch’s unique software puts wellness directly in your hands, showing that the makers of health-tracking wearables are finally focusing on offering up solutions as opposed to just throwing biometric data at you for you to decipher.

TP-Link Archer BE9000
Image Credit: TP-Link New Wi-Fi routers typically aren’t the sexiest tech to come out of CES, but the TP-Link Archer BE9000’s eye-catching displays makes it stand out from the crowd. This isn’t a traditional Wi-Fi router — it’s a cool router.
The bottom touchscreen is as useful as it is charming, displaying everything from practical system information (download and upload speeds), with the top LED screen capable of showing 3,000 customized graphics, including emojis, text, and even the weather.
Not to mention it’s EasyMesh compatible, so you can combine it with other routers or extenders for a wide-ranging mesh network (although with 12 internal antennas, you’ll always get a powerful signal no matter where you are at home). Did we mention how many ports you’ll get here? Two USB ports (USB 2.0 and USB 3.0), four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, a 10Gbps combination Ethernet and fiber port, and a 10 Gbps WAN/Lan port. Maximum flexibility, maxmimum power, and maxmimum style.

Brava Glass
Image Credit: Brava While the Brava Glass has all the sizzling-hot features of the original 2018 model, this oven finally has one massive upgrade that changes the smart cooking game — a glass front door so you can peek in and actually observe how your food is roasting up.
That may not seem like much, but before you could only check doneness through a camera in the cooking chamber you viewed through the smartphone app, or by physically opening the oven (losing precious heat). Baking, roasting, air-frying, broiling, toasting, reheating, slow cooking, and warming are still a breeze with the Brava Glass, and using infrared lights for heat help with faster cooktime and eliminate pre-heating.
It’s still a luxury (and is priced like one, too), but the addition of a sleek window helps the whole cooking process overall feel more intuitive. For anyone looking to automate their meal prep routine, the Brava Glass is worth every penny.

Belkin BoostCharge Pro 4-Port GaN 108W Charger
Image Credit: Belkin Belkin is going green, with a new, “responsibly-built” line of wireless chargers, power banks, wall chargers, and more. The revamped products are part of the company’s huge bet on sustainability, using new plastic-free packaging and updating their most popular products with 73 to 75% post-consumer recycled plastics (PCR).
We took a look at one of our old favorites — Belkin’s BoostCharge Pro 4-Port GaN 108W Charger — and found little to no difference between the updated version and the existing one. You’ll still get the same “Intelligent Power Sharing” that can charge a MacBook Pro at full speed, or fast charge an iPhone and iPad with two other devices at the same time.
Are these entirely new products or massive innovations in existing charging tech? No. But any eco-friendly tech advancement is both welcomed and necessary in this day and age, and Belkin is showing others how it’s done.

Roku Plus OLED TV
Image Credit: Roku Is anyone really surprised that Roku is coming out with their own TV? Although inevitable, the streaming heavyweight has their eye on creating a more streamlined, well-designed TV experience.
While light on spec details, Roku is clearly aiming big with this new series, which includes the HD Roku Select and premium 4K Roku Plus Series TVs. Offering 11 models ranging from 24 to 75 inches, Roku really has their eye on value here, with prices ranging from a modest $119 to just under $1,000. Both will offer Roku Voice Remotes, with the Plus Series TVs including a Roku Voice Remote Pro (rechargable, and capable of voice commands).
By breaking free from integration with other manufacturers’ TVs and soundbars, Roku is carving its own path with the Roku Select and Plus Series TVs, showcasing how much they can innovate when both the software and hardware are in their own hands.

Drop BMR1 Nearfield Monitors

They’re quite versatile, and can be vertically or horizontally positioned, above or below your monitor, which offers a lot of freedom of placement if you don’t have a lot of desk real estate to work with.
Their sleek, unique design also allows them to produce good audio in any position, delivering a wide soundstage with crisp, audiophile-level sound and little distortion. Even up close, getting reproduction this accurate is pretty incredible. This is thanks to Drop’s balanced mode radiators (BMR) and force-canceling passive radiators. Connect them to your computer via the 3.5mm AUX input, or stream music via Bluetooth.
Whether you’re a professional sound mixer, or just want to beef up your work-from-home audio setup, Drop’s BMR1 Nearfield Monitors are the desk-sized sweet spot of audiophile sound.

Acer eKinekt BD 3 Bike Desk

Making treadmill and standing desks look like child’s play, you can get “75 watts of self-generated power” from just an hour of cycling at 60 RPM.
Acer’s bike desk comes with two USB Type-A ports and a single USB Type-C port, so you can charge multiple devices at once (although you might need to break more of a sweat). That being said, you don’t always have to break out the sweatband — the desk can function “Working” (positioned closer to you so you can sit upright while typing) or “Sports” mode (pushed further back for a more rigorous ride with increased resistance). A smartphone app shows fitness metrics and how many watts of power you’ve generated.
While you could always just plug your laptop into a wall, Acer’s bike desk cleverly (and successfully) takes advantage of our constantly connected lives to encourage a more sustainable and healthier lifestyle.

Focal Vestia N°3 Floorstanding Speakers

Improving upon their Slatefiber speaker driver tech, they feature a new aluminum/magnesium “M”-shaped dome TAM tweeter, which fine-tunes the treble reproduction significantly. Of the five additions, we think the standout is the Vestia N°3, a three-way floorstanding speaker that offers balanced, bright sound and an incredibly deep soundstage.

Heybike Tyson
Image Credit: Heybike Compact and practical, the Heybike Tyson has made the dream of a full-suspension e-bike on a one-piece frame a reality. Built from a unibody magnesium alloy frame, this makes the bike lightweight without sacrificing any durability.
The Tyson is powered by a 750W hub electric motor in the rear wheel with a 48V 15Ah battery. Heybike claims you can get a maximum range of 55 miles (88 km) on pedal assist out of the battery pack, but we’ve yet to test this. For the amount of portability you get from this light, folding frame, it can handle a lot — the bike includes both a front and rear suspension for hitting the trails, 20 x 4-inch fat tires that can handle any terrain, and a sturdy rear rack that can haul up to 120 pounds.
To take you where to go, Heybike Tyson is a dependable, versatile alternative to your typical folding or e-bike.

Lockly Flex Touch Pro
Image Credit: Lockly By adding a fingerprint scanner, Lockly’s new smart lock is a handy security upgrade for renters who can’t change their existing deadbolts out. The Lockly Flex Touch uses 3D biometric touch technology to let you unlock your home quickly, and the company says the lock can store up to 99 fingerprints.
With Lockly app, you can check in on the status of your door no matter where you are thanks to the lock’s Wi-Fi support. With added voice controls, you can also lock and unlock the Flex Touch Pro hands-free if you’re carrying groceries or a crying baby (Google Home and Amazon Alexa can also be used for remote access).
The Flex Touch Pro is IPX4-certified, allowing it withstand stormy weather, and the battery lasts up to nine months. With a retrofitting design and effective biometric scanner, the Flex Touch Pro is the smartest way to get quick access to your home.

OVR ION 3

The ION 3 connects wirelessly to your smartphone, PC, or VR/AR headset via Bluetooth, and includes several scent cartridges. Panasonic Lumix S5II

These are the first Lumix mirrorless cameras to use this new auto-focus system (developed in collaboration with Leica), with a 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor and a new imaging engine. What does this mean in practice? Once locked on to a subject, the auto-focus will continue to track your subject even in bad light conditions or with mulitple objects moving in frame, making it stellar for action shots.
But the updates didn’t stop there — you can take ever faster burst shots, with 30fps stills using the electronic shutter mode, and the large, 3,680K-dot OLED LVF (Live View Finder) will let you see everything you need to take the shot. Panasonic flexed when came to video, too, with a smart heat dispertion system allowing for the ability to record video at 6K resolution, indefinitely, to external storage (a win for livestreamers).
There’s a lot to love here, but we think that massive improvements to the auto-focus put the Lumix S5II on par with the Nikon and Canon for the ultimate mirrorless camera.
