The design of decorative water pools – in both private and corporate gardens – in my opinion is very interesting, especially because it allows to modify the space and the perception of the observers by creating great compositional harmony.
Water in the gardens can be considered a decorative component but a breaking element as well, and at the same time water can live harmoniously and naturally with green spaces, the mirror effect of the water can be a point where to draw viewers’ attention. It is an extra element that enriches a garden and makes it more pleasant and relaxing.
The water pools could have geometric shapes or natural forms, in the first case a container structure previously prepared is inserted in the ground (it can be rectangular, square or more elongated to represent a stream). This structure is built usually with reinforced concrete cast on site, then the structure is covered with PVC waterproof fabric and the finishing materials will be applied.
In the second case prefabricated fiberglass structures can be used, with pre-established forms, or working directly on the excavation, that can be covered with PVC waterproof fabric. To prevent future tears in the ground, the banks of the pool can be made more solid with the application of concrete slabs or stone.
These water stretches need a position that can be clearly visible from distance too and that don’t disappear “in the green” because they should be the protagonists of the garden. They must be positioned in a location with easy access to the water supply too. While containers with fountains or current water, that make garden more relaxing thanks to the noise of water in motion, have to be placed near to sources of electricity.
It is then necessary to add a system that ensures water recirculation, an overflow device, the inspection wells (especially for large tanks) and last but not least could be optionally added some aquatic plants suitable to survive in full sun conditions or in a shaded containers too, these plants are useful for phytoremediation of water and beautiful at the same time.
Water is a natural element that ideally completes a garden and that makes it various but harmonious, moved but balanced, therefore nice to observe and to live. Designing every detail of the green area of the water mirror and their integration is critical to creating a result that gives a major impact, able to move the emotions of the oberservers.
