From Via Sant'Antonio Abate No. 7, in the heart of the well-preserved historic center of Mandas, there is access (through “on portals”) to a large internal courtyard (“sa pratza”), which has guarded the small church of the same name since 1200.
The courtyard, at least since the end of the 19th century, is dominated by the houses that belonged to the Marongiu and Landis families, architecture that brings back to the atmosphere of yesteryear, in a climate that remained essentially frozen in time for hundreds of years, until the advent of the latest technological and social revolutions of the modern and contemporary age.
The buildings of the Marongiu and Landis houses, which currently house the visitor and exhibition center of the Mandas museum complex, have been renovated preserving the original exposed local stone walls, and the wooden and cane roofs.
The objects in the museum collections, collected through donations, are witnesses and guardians of the agro-pastoral and artisan traditions of the Trexenta and other areas of south-eastern Sardinia and Campidano.
Inaugurated on August 5, 2005, the renovated Museum Houses, containing the exhibition “Is lollas de is Aiaiusu” (grandparents' rooms), together constitute an ethnographic museum unique in its completeness and richness.
The “Mandarin Urban Route”, which is part of the services available at the Mandas Museum Complex, is compulsorily focused here, inside the old farmers' house, in the outdoor and indoor environments typical of tradition:
• S'apposentu de croccai (the bedroom); • Sa coxinedda (the small kitchen);
• Sa lolla de su forru (the oven room); • S' apposentu de is ainas (the tool room);
• S'apposentu de su trellaxiu (the oven room) frame room);
• Up magasinu de su inu (the wine warehouse);
• S'apposentu de is traballusu: su maistu de muru (bricklayer), su maistu de linna (carpenter), su sabateri (cobbler), su braberi (barber), su ferreri (blacksmith); • Sa lolla obetta (the porch);
• Su braxeri de su fogadoni (the space for the great Fire of the celebrations of Saint Anthony the Abbot).
In the area surrounding “Su braxeri de su fogadoni”, every 16 January, accompanied by a huge bonfire, rites and celebrations are celebrated in honor of Saint Anthony the Abbot, where it is possible to live unique experiences, from themed dinners to educational activities.
Why it is important to visit it
The ancient “grandparents' houses”, with attention to every detail, where you can breathe the atmosphere of the past and where each room also marks the “time phases” of days of a distant time, allow you to experience an exciting journey through the objects, tools and daily activities, of the life of your ancestors.
