The final curtain falls on the NESTS Saga.
Team battles have evolved even further with the introduction of the Tactical Order Select System.
This is the third and final chapter to the NESTS Saga. KOF 2001 lets players create teams they couldn't have created before in the KOF series with the use of the 4-on-4 Tactical Order Select System that allows more freedom in team battles using the familiar Striker System. What's more, it brings players new evolutions in gaming with the introduction of the new extra-attack system, "Wire Damage."

STORY OF KOF 2001
During the events of KOF 2000, an entire city was wiped off the map by an orbital weapon known as the Zero Cannon.
Front pages all over the world reported this to be the result of a satellite accidentally crashing to Earth. Not a whisper otherwise reached the public's ears.
The tournament itself came to be labeled as a herald of disasters, with people everywhere calling for its termination. Ironically, the increased attention only served to bolster the contest's popularity.
Interest in KOF rivaled that of its '97 outing—perhaps even surpassed it.
2001 comes about. On the international stage, an astonishing truth comes to light: a team has stepped up to represent NESTS in the tournament.
What could be the true purpose of this year's organizer?
Is tragedy doomed to descend upon this year's proceedings as well?
The three-part NESTS saga finally comes to a close in this year's King of Fighters!
