Alys Tomlinson's work focuses on the relationship between people and place, exploring themes of environment, belonging and identity. Her major body of work, Ex-Voto, explores Christian pilgrimage sites in Lourdes (France), Ballyvourney (Ireland) and Grabarka (Poland). In 2020 her portrait project Lost Summer, she photographed teenagers in London whose proms had been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Tomlinson is currently co-directing Mother Vera, a feature-length documentary film supported by the Sundance Institute, which focuses on the life of a nun from Belarus.

The photograph offered here is drawn from her newest series Gli Isolani (The Islanders) for which she documented traditional costumes and masks worn during festivities and celebrations on islands of the Venetian lagoon, Sicily and Sardinia. Over two years, Tomlinson photographed locals dressed in costumes inspired by paganism, fables and folklore. The image evokes a timeless quality and invite us to enter a mysterious world of good and evil, the sacred and profane.
