Spring is the time of year when you think about updating your wardrobe with seasonal transition pieces, and a good trench should be the first thing on your list. Trench coats are the perfect staple for when the temperature begins to drop and the weather becomes unpredictable.

When you imagine a classic trench coat, you probably think all-weather, often khaki-colored, double-breasted design with structured lapels, and a waist-cinching belt. Am I right? Maybe designers like Burberry and Ralph Lauren come to mind as well since both labels have helped popularize the look since its inception. But your favorite cool-girl brands and affordable retailers — including Cult Gaia, Farm Rio, the Frankie Shop, Zara, and Mango — also have stylish trench coats for every aesthetic and occasion.

So this season, shop for your favorite camel coats and wintertime puffers, but don’t forget to add a transitional trench (or two) to your cart as well. Whether you’re looking for a sleek style to pair with your everyday looks, something durable to tackle the changing weather, or a style that’s ideal for layering, these are the 15 best trench coats the internet has to offer.

The Best Classic Trench Coats

A classic trench coat is conservative and timeless, just like the selections below. You’ll find investment pieces from Burberry (the brand behind the original trench) and Ralph Lauren (the all-American option) in addition to all-weather trenches from beloved brands that are a bit more accessible in terms of price point, including Mango and Banana Republic.

I’ve come to rely on Everlane for outerwear items that last for years — and don’t cost a fortune. Although my beloved Gathered Drape Trench (pictured above) is almost out of stock, the brand’s newer version is just as good. Featuring a double-breasted design and relaxed silhouette, the Cotton Long Trench Coat is a closet staple you’ll want to wear over and over again. It’s fully lined, water-resistant, and made of 100 percent cotton.

Available in sizes XXS–XL.

Say hello to a classic trench that’s both functional and flattering. Not only does it feature a water-resistant coating to protect against the elements, but its lightweight fabric creates a feminine drape, and it has a thick belt that helps cinch the waist.

Available in sizes 0–14.

Be prepared for whatever the weather may bring with this classic twill trench, which features a center vent in the back and a traditional double-breasted closure with storm flaps. As opposed to other straight-cut coats, it has a slightly oversize silhouette to create a more relaxed fit.

Available in sizes XXS–XXL.

Sézane is one of my go-to brands for mid-priced wardrobe essentials that are tailored to perfection and feel more expensive than they actually are. This trench coat is no exception. The no-frills design features large lapels, button ties on the shoulders and cuffs, and a removable tie waist belt. It’s available in this camel color and a khaki green hue.

Available in sizes 0–16.

This minimalist take on the classic trench has just two buttons, a slightly boxy silhouette, and a simple waist belt. Reviewers say it runs a bit large, so size down if you want a more tailored fit.

Available in sizes XS–XL.

If you’re looking to invest in a forever staple — a sophisticated piece that you can wear year-round — there’s nothing quite like a Burberry trench. The famous style features shower-resistant gabardine as well as the brand’s iconic checked lining.

Available in sizes 0–16.

The Best Textured Trench Coats

Even though you might want to wear a more traditional all-weather trench on days when it’s raining outside, why not break out some textured trenches when the skies are clear? You can switch up your look without having to worry about weather damage.

I get so many compliments every time I wear this faux-leather trench. It’s comfortable, warm, and a bit oversize, which makes it perfect for layering over thick sweaters or cardigans in the fall and winter. Since this coat is edgy and sleek, my favorite way to style it is with ultrafeminine pieces — it adds a bit of contrast. I’ve also been very impressed with the quality and durability, considering the affordable price point.

Available in sizes XXS–XL.

Another faux-leather option for those who love a little extra flair. If you find you need a coat that says “I’m fashionable and fabulous” when you walk into the room, this glossy faux-leather look with faux-fur cuffs and collar may just be the statement piece you’re looking for.

Available in sizes XS–XL.

Suede trench coats are the epitome of chic, but you’ll be hard pressed to find one for under $1,000. This more affordable version from Mango is a great addition to your rotation of seasonal transition pieces, especially for chilly spring mornings that aren’t quite cold enough for a heavy coat.

Available in sizes XS–XL.

With peaked lapels, padded shoulders, and a boxy silhouette, this maxi-length trench is the ultimate outfit-maker (you definitely won’t want to drop it off at coat check).

Available in one size.

The Best Fashion-Forward Trench Coats

If you love the idea of a trench but want something a little less classic (and a little more trendy), scroll on to shop my selection of coats that have the flair you’re looking for. Even though some of them will not keep you dry or protect you from the elements, all six styles are sure to make a fashion statement.

Say hello to one of my most-worn pieces of fall 2023 thus far — sure, it’s an investment, but I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth! This double-breasted trench features a roomy, oversize fit and exaggerated proportions, so it makes a statement no matter what you wear underneath. The stiff material — in addition to details like double-wrap belted cuffs and monogram-logo lining — feels so luxurious. My only complaint? No pockets.

Available in sizes 4-8.

If you want a sophisticated trench that can be worn in rainy weather, look no further than this one from Swedish label A Day’s March. It combines the crisp, stiff texture of a traditional raincoat with the design of a classic trench. The billowy sleeves and oversize fit make even the most boring outfits look so much cooler.

Available in sizes EU 34–42.

If you’re a fan of Farm Rio’s vibrant color palette, then you’re probably not afraid to rock bold shades like this green. Some trench coats can come off a little conservative and stuffy, but this one is an easy, relaxed version of the classic style.

Available in sizes XXS–XL.

Another one-and-done outfit, this faux-snakeskin trench is the secret weapon you can whip out on days when you feel like you have nothing to wear. Just throw on a black T-shirt underneath and you’re good to go.

Available in sizes XXS–XL.

Consider swapping out your favorite denim jacket for this trench coat version by Aligne. Design details like the extra-long length, top-stitching, and horn buttons feel so stylish and elevated.

Available in U.K. sizes 6–22.
