A beautiful Pre-Columbian Stone Metate, complete with Mano, Costa Rica, 1st. millenium A.D.

A rarely seen complete square Metate with a turtle head and grinding stone, socalled manu, standing on three legs. This Metate is authentic and comes with a beautiful ancient patina and provenance from old Danish collection.

Carved, volcanic-stone ceremonial metates represent one of the most unusual and complex traditions of pre-Columbian artifacts and typical for Costa Rica / Dominican Republic.

They come in many different forms, and morphological variation corresponds to different regions and time periods. They can be rectangular, circular, flat, or curved. They may or may not have rims and between three and four legs. Some exhibits show signs of use-wear while others show no signs of wear and appear to have been made specifically for use as burial goods.

Our Metate is of the effigy-headed metate style, which feature an animals head at one end, with the metate itself making up the body of the creature.

Size: 21,2 cm. long and 13 cm. wide. The Manu is 14 cm. long.

Condition: Choice, evidense of wear and much weathering but intact.

Provenance: Old Danish Collection, aquired in the 1960s-1970s.
