Averna

The monk Frà Girolamo gave away the secret recipe to a textile merchant in 1868. His name was Salvatore Averna. He was grateful for this gift and began to make the herbal liqueur for the guests of his country house. At the beginning of the 19th century his son Francesco Averna took over the business. He exhibited the liqueur at trade fairs in Italy. Averna received a great honour from the third king of Italy. Since then Averna has carried the royal coat of arms and the inscription "Patent of the royal household" on his label. In 1978, the Averna family business became the market leader in Italy. Today the company exports to all countries of the world.

Production

At that time a monastery was a place of herbology. So it is not surprising that many different herbs can be found in Amaro Averna. Until today Averna keeps its tradition and uses only Mediterranean herbs. Herbs, roots, spices, essential oils and bitter oranges are typical. The addition of lemon gives a pleasant freshness. All ingredients are crushed and mixed. The ingredients are then covered with pure alcohol. The aromas are released from the ingredients. If the mixing ratio is right, the Averna is bottled.
