What to see in Susegana: the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The first stage on our tour of Susegana's attractions is the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the main Catholic religious building within the village and its territory. This church certainly represents a great example of architecture and fully reflects the artistic taste of the fifteenth century, the period in which it was built together with its majestic and peculiar bell tower. However, this is not the oldest church in Susegana; in fact, this honor goes to the primitive church dedicated to St. Daniel, also known as church of the vineyard, perhaps built before the year 1000 and restored in the twelfth century before being definitively abandoned. Today only a few ruins remain that witness the existence of this ancient structure.
Among the other churches in the surroundings of the village, we also suggest: the eighteenth-century oratory of the Annunziata, at the foot of the San Salvatore hill, where is kept a lunette picturing the Archangel Gabriel, and the sixteenth-century former Carmelite convent on the road that lead to the castle.
As for the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the heart of Susegana, if you are passionate about art and in particular sacred art we suggest you to visit the inside: here, together with the remains of ancient fifteenth-century frescoes, you can admire the depiction of the sacred conversation with the Holy Mary and Child on the throne and the saints John the Baptist, Catherine of Alexandria, the prophet Daniel and Peter, a masterpiece created in 1516 by Giovanni Antonio de' Sacchis, known as "Il Pordenone".
The castles of San Salvatore and Collalto in Susegana
The history of the hilly territory of Susegana and the other small villages in the area is closely linked to that of one of the most noble families in Veneto and especially in Treviso: the Collalto. This ancient dynasty, probably of Lombard origin, in fact has left important traces in the form of beautiful castles which today embellish the panorama of the Prosecco Hills and certainly represent fantastic destinations for all the enthusiasts, perfect especially to visit at the end of long walks to discover the surrounding landscapes.
Today the most important and symbolic one is the castle of San Salvatore, which dominates the Susegana area from the top of the namesake hill with a view that goes from the village to the banks of the Piave river and the surrounding hills. Built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the castle currently consists of the external crenellated walls, the Odoardo palace and its majestic tower together with the church of Santa Croce. Inside there are also ruins of other ancient buildings.
Obviously, the Collalto Castle is worthy to be taken into account too, located in the namesake hamlet close to Susegana. This castle was built in the twelfth century as the first residence of the Collalto family, who later moved to the more recent San Salvatore, definitely transforming it into a defensive military stronghold. This passage had a severe influence to the fate of the castle, as nowadays only part of the walls, the ancient gate and its large main tower remain intact after the devastation suffered in the nineteenth-century wars and especially during the first world war. There is also a dark legend concerning the castle tower, which will make all horror lovers happy: the story tells, in fact, that inside it the young handmaid Bianca di Collalto was buried alive behind a wall in the wider setting of a clash between her family and rivals, the Da Camino, and that today her ghost wanders among the ruins of the building crying. A perfect location for a pleasant walk in the feeble sunlight of autumn twilight, perhaps on Halloween day!
Hiking in Susegana and surroundings following the Piave river
The area of Susegana offers many possibilities for all those who wish to go on an adventure and discover hidden places and natural beauties, far from inhabited centers and immersed in a green and peaceful landscape, perhaps full of suggestive emotions. Our hiking itinerary starts from Via San Salvatore, the road that leads from inside the village to the namesake castle. Here you come across something extremely particular: the book tree, a real mini-library created from the cavity of the trunk of a tree along the road, an attraction that certainly captures the attention of children, but also of adults who live their lives like eternal Peter Pans!
Proceeding the walk, passing the castle of San Salvatore and reaching the hills behind it, you get to a vast area full of paths and routes ideal for long walks. In particular, our next stop is Colle della Tombola, a panoramic point cloaked in greenery from which you can enjoy an interesting and suggestive view of the panorama. From here it is possible to continue, by undertaking a long march towards North-West in the quiet of the woods and vineyards up to Collalto; in this case, we remind you about the presence of a curious attraction along the path, about halfway before arriving at the castle, which is the monument dedicated to the Blessed Giuliana of Collalto and Saint Lucia.
But we also suggest another option: move South towards the banks of Piave river and venture to discover important historical sites, such as the Roman bridge near Villa Jacur which still firmly crosses the river, and some natural caves, including one that stands out above all as during the first world war it was used as a sheltered field hospital. Going on on the journey along the river towards West, you will be able to enjoy a long walk in nature crossing paths and hills in this area with a view of concrete beauty on the wonders created by nature in this corner of the Veneto.
How to get to Susegana
Let's see now how to easily get to Susegana by car starting from Venice-Mestre, the heart of the Veneto from a logistical point of view, or directly from Treviso, the provincial capital. The route departing from Mestre, lasting about 1 hour for 50km, runs along the motorway system, firstly driving on the A57 and then getting to the A27, continuing this way until the Conegliano exit and then proceeding towards Susegana following the SS13 towards South; on the other hand, you can take the exit of the A27 motorway at Treviso, following the indications driving through SR89 and SR53, and then get to the SS13 and drive North to Susegana. Obviously, if you prefer to follow the route starting directly from Treviso, it will be sufficient to travel along the SS13 as indicated for a car journey lasting about half an hour for 20km. If you prefer to travel by public transport, starting from Treviso it is possible to take a direct regional train to Conegliano, a trip lasting about 40 minutes; once you get off there, you can easily continue towards Susegana by local bus.
