20 Portman Square, London

In the 1770s, Adam worked mainly on building projects in London. In a number of town houses he was able to demonstrate his skills in extremely confined spaces. A well-preserved example is Number 20, Portman Square, erected in 1773-76 for the Countess of Home. The circular stairwell is removed to the left side of the building. The balustrades and the cupola providing natural light are made of the new materials iron and glass.
