The start of 2024 appears to be a quiet one for Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, as the couple are reportedly trying to “lay low” after coming under fire for writing letters of support for convicted rapist Danny Masterson.

If you’ll recall, the couple faced major backlash after the character statements they’d written for their 47-year-old That ’70s Show co-star during his rape trial – which they thought would remain private – went public. Although they apologized profusely, and Kutcher resigned from his role as chairman of a non-profit he co-founded to combat child sexual exploitation, they have still been cancelled by fans – hence why they are now trying to keep their heads down.

Mila Kunis And Ashton Kutcher Are 'Shocked' About The Public's Reaction

An insider reportedly told In Touch Weekly that the 40-year-old Black Swan actress and the 45-year-old No Strings Attached actor are shocked about how the public have reacted to their letters of support for their former co-star, and are currently trying to stay out of the spotlight.

"Mila and Ashton used to be a genuinely liked and well-respected pair, so this has been a huge wake-up call for them," an insider told the pub. "They are shocked to the core and are doing their best to lay low, hoping it doesn't jeopardize their careers in the long-term."

The insider went on to insist that the married couple, who are parents to daughter Wyatt, 9, and son Dimitri, 7, believed that Masterson would be exonerated. "The idea that one of their closest friends could be capable of something so heinous just didn't seem to register," the insider continued.

"They see now it was ultimately a calamitous decision that's totally backfired and blown up in their faces. All the reasoning in the world doesn't detract from the fact that they went to bat for a convicted rapist. It's a horrific look no matter how they spin it."

Fans Are Divided On Social Media

Many social media users sounded off in the comments section of a January 2nd Instagram post from In Touch Weekly, with one person saying: "So basically they're shocked their actions have consequences." "What did they think was going to happen? I mean seriously," said another. "I'm shocked that they are shocked," commented another reader, to which one person replied, "exactly," with another adding, "literally." Another IG user wrote, "I was absolutely DISGUSTED by the choice they made," in reference to their choice to write the letters of support.

Others did come to the couple's defense, with one person writing: "He was innocent until proven guilty. They believed in his innocence at that time." "If they honestly didn't think he was guilty I could understand them writing a letter. They all grew up together," thought another.

"This is ridiculous. We all have had friends that have done things we had no clue about. You usually give them the benefit of the doubt," someone else wrote, as another added: "I don't see what is wrong with them supporting their friend. They thought he was innocent and showed support. You don't have to follow in line for everything. That's what's wrong with this world, no one can have a different opinion, or belief without someone saying you're wrong! Leave them alone!"
