<strong>Electric</strong> <strong>Locomotive</strong> <strong>E464</strong><br />

In February 2007 Bombardier Transportation was<br />

awarded a contract by the Italian Railways (Trenitalia<br />

S.p.A.) for the supply of 150 <strong>E464</strong> electric locomo-<br />

tives. The contract represents the latest follow-on<br />

order signed with Trenitalia from 1996, bringing the<br />

total number to 538 locomotives of the same type.<br />

The locomotive can develop a power of 3 500 kW at the<br />

wheels at up to 160 km/h. The body rests on 2 two-axle<br />

bogies, each equipped with 2 three-phase asynchronous<br />

motors in double star configuration. The water-cooled GTO<br />

converter is composed of two series-connected threephase<br />

bridges. If one bridge should fail, the locomotive can<br />

still operate with full adhesion at reduced power. The<br />

locomotive is designed for 3 kV lines but operation under<br />

1.5 kV DC is possible with reduced performance. The loco-<br />

<strong>Locomotive</strong>s<br />

motive is equipped with a diagnostic and operator guide<br />

system. The medium power <strong>E464</strong> loco series is mainly<br />

intended for regional and interregional passenger services.<br />

It can develop both high acceleration and deceleration,<br />

and is ideally suited to services with many stops.
