Common name: Clary sage

Salvia are the largest genus of plants in the sage (Lamiaceae) family, with nearly 1000 species. Salvias include shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and annuals. Salvias are naturally distributed over three distinct regions of diversity: Central and South America ( approx: 600 species); Central Asia and the Mediterranean (250 species); Eastern Asia (90 species). There are salvias for every type of garden, and in many colours.

Clary sage is a Biennial or short lived perennial (though it will self sow readily) native to parts of the northern Mediterranean, north Africa, and central Asia.

It is commonly grown as a herb for it’s essential oil. The essential oil is used in perfumes, liquers, and aromatherapy.

Clary sage plants are big and bold, making a strong statement in the garden. The large leaves grow quickly in spring. Leaves can be as long as 30 cms, are a light grey / green and furry. Tall flower spikes form from spring through summer. flower colour ranges from pink to mauve and white.
