In a Twitter post on Monday, Hill Harper — an actor, Detroit business owner and resident — announced his intention to run for U.S. Senate as a Democrat, joining an increasingly crowded field.
He posted:
“We can all feel it: D.C just isn’t getting things done for people.
We need representatives who’ll take on special interests, get money out of politics, and make our government work for all of us.
That’s why today, I’m announcing my campaign for U.S. Senate in Michigan!”
Harper, an Iowa native, is expected to hold events across the state on Tuesday where he’ll launch his campaign, including one in Detroit. He purchased a home in Detroit in 2016 and a coffee shop in the city in recent years.
Harper will vie for the 2024 U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing).
On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing), Michigan Board of Education President Pamela Pugh, former state Rep. Leslie Love (D-Detroit), businessman Nasser Beydoun and attorney Zack Burns are also running.
Several Republicans also have declared: Nikki Snyder, a member of the State Board of Education; attorney Alexandria Taylor, who has represented Michigan GOP Chair Kristina Karamo; former Berrien County Commissioner Ezra Scott; and Michael Hoover, who used to work for Dow Chemical Co.
Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican formerly from Howell who now lives in Florida, also is interested in running, per Politico. He is “actively scoping out property in Michigan,” Politico reports.
“Mike Rogers is humbled by the outpouring of encouragement he’s received to run for federal office by Michigan friends, family and neighbors, as well as people across the country,” John Stineman, an adviser to Rogers, told Politico last month. “People recognize the need for strong leadership to meet the challenges America faces, and Rogers is actively considering the best way to continue his career of service.”
Rogers, who served in the U.S. House from 2001 to 2014 and represented the district Slotkin was elected to in 2018, has also considered a presidential bid. Rogers has been critical of former President Donald Trump, who is seeking a return to the White House in 2024.
Other Republicans weighing a Senate run are John Tuttle, vice chair of the New York Stock Exchange and former Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Grand Rapids), who lost his 3rd Congressional District seat in the August 2022 primary.
