In an interview on SiriusXM's The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, the Civil War actress recalled meeting Plemons "for the first time" at an airport, before they began playing a married couple on season 2 of the FX series Fargo, in 2015.

"We were both getting on the plane to go to Calgary, and I looked in his eyes," said Dunst, 41. "I still know that image of him in my brain. You just know sometimes."

"I said to my best friend two weeks in ... 'I will know him for the rest of my life,' " she added of Plemons, 36. "It was just an immediate soul connection, you know?"

In a recent cover profile for Texas Monthly highlighting her husband — whom Dunst has collaborated with multiple times since Fargo, including in 2021's The Power of the Dog and the soon-to-be-released Civil War — she shared more about their first meeting.

“Immediately I felt safe, and he did too,” said the actress. “And free.”

Dunst also referred to her husband as "one of the kindest humans I’ve ever met" during her chat with the magazine, adding, “I think that sensitivity makes him very astute when it comes to other people."

After getting engaged in 2017, Plemons and Dunst welcomed two sons: Ennis, 5½, and James, who turns 3 this year. PEOPLE confirmed that the couple had married in July 2022.

The pair's latest big-screen project, Civil War, follows a group of people in a "race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge."

Dunst stars as a photojournalist named Lee documenting a modern civil war in the United States, while Plemons appears as a soldier who confronts and threatens Lee and her colleagues as they travel through the country.

Trailers for the film have teased the tense moment, and Dunst recently told Entertainment Tonight that her husband "wouldn't play a part like this" normally.

"He did a favor for us because that is a really disturbing role to play, so it's not like he was jumping at the chance to play the role," she said of the Killers of the Flower Moon actor.

Dunst added, "Even reading the script, it's one of the craziest things I've ever seen. When we rolled up to set, it was just very, very tense and emotional for everybody filming that scene."

Written and directed by Alex Garland, Civil War also counts Wagner MouraStephen McKinley HendersonCailee Spaeny and Nick Offerman among its cast.

Civil War debuts in theaters Friday, April 12.
