Description Perennial herb, up to 60cm tall. Bulb spherical or broadly ovate, 1-2cm in diameter, consisting of 2 scales. Leaf usually opposite, a few grown in middle and upper parts, or sparsely grown,or 3-4 pieces whorled, linear or linear lanceolate, 4-12cm long, 3-5(-15)mm wide, tip enrolled or not enrolled. Stem apex flower solitary, rarely 2-3, yellow or yellowish green, campanulate or narrowly campanulate, with various purple spots and quadrilled strips, sometimes purple spot or quadrilled strip more than yellowish green counterpart; leafy bract 3, accrete or not accrete with the leaf in lower part, tip enrolled or not curved; perianth 6 pieces, purple, with yellowish green spots, various in shape, 2.8-5.5cm long, dense-gland fossa clearly protruding, long ovate, invert ovate or broadly elliptical, 3-5mm long, green, yellowish green or purple, 4-8mm away from perianth and base; stamen 2-3mm long, anther nearly basal, filament not papillose or slightly papillose; stigma lobe 3-5cm long. Capsule ridge with narrow wings. Flowering: May to July, fruiting:August to October.
Distribution Growing in alp thickets, meadow or fir forests. Distributed in South Gansu, South Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan and etc.
Part Used Medical part: bulb. Chinese name: Chuanbeimu.
Harvest & Processing Excavated both in the third growing season after sowing, and the next year of bulb propagation. Excavated on sunny days in June-July when stem leaves wither, cleared earth, avoid injury, not to elutriate, spread fresh Beimu timely on bamboo mat, sundried, better sun-dried until semi-dried in one day, and can be fully sun-dried the next day.
Chemistry Contains fririmine and sipeimine.
Pharmacology Effective on respiratory system and smooth muscle, decompressing; toxic.
Properties & Actions Taste sweet, bitter, little cold in nature.Clearing lung-heat and moistening, dissipating phlegm and suppressing cough, dissipating binds for detumescence.
Indications & Usage Pulmonasthenia due to long term coughing, coughing with asthma due to consumptive disease, xeropyretic cough, pulmonary abscess, scrofula, anthracia, mammary abscess.Oral administration: decocting, 3-9g; powdered, 1-1.5g; or made as pills or powders. External application: appropriate amount, powdered for applying; or applied after mixed with fluid.
Examples 1. Whooping cough: baihuashe 5g, fritillary 10g, fresh ural licorice 10g. Crush the above three drugs, sieve, mix evenly. Take 1.5-3g orally each time, 3 times a day.
2. Promoting lactation: oyster, anemarrhena, fritillary. Grind three drugs into a fine powder, prepare with pig feet soup and swallow.
