Cotton Root - Gossypium Herbaceum

Origin: Brazil

Used part: Root

Description:

The cotton plant (Gossypium herbaceum) is a plant of the family Malvaceae used in natural medicine in a wide way. It is speculated that it originated in Asia, although there are records of a long time ago, 500 BC, which speak about its cultivation already in countries like China, India and Egypt. Speaking of Brazil, cotton was brought to Tupiniquins lands around the eighteenth century. It is a type of shrub that has branches, long leaves and gives rise to solitary fruits and yellow coloring. Nowadays, about forty different species of this plant have been found native to the tropical and subtropical regions.

Health benefits:

In the United States the barks from its roots have been used extensively as inducers of labor or acting as an effective way to staunch postpartum blood. In China, their seeds have already been used as male contraceptives because they are related to infertility.

In the case of medicine, its tea is well suited for various clinical cases, especially for the substitution of breast milk, when it is lacking, so that, from the second or third day, the production of breast milk can be observed in greater quantity. Chemically speaking it is composed of furfurol, serotonin, essential oils, resin, tannin, phenols, organic acids, vitamin E and phytosterols.

Good Herbal Remedy:

  • Increased production of breast milk
  • Decreased uterine bleeding
  • Decreased spermatogenesis
  • Improvement of cholesterol levels
  • Decreased prostate size
  • Cases of renal infection, rheumatism or diarrhea
  • Decrease in heavy menstruation

Directions:

  1. Add 2 tablespoons to a quart of water
  2. Let it cook for about 10 minutes, from the moment it starts to boil
  3. Remove from the heat and let stand for 10 minutes
  4. Strain and is ready for use

How to drink:

Take 1 cup 3 times a day.

Contraindications:

Do not administer cotton tea in cases of women who wish to become pregnant due to the presence of carapsin in the active principles of cotton. Intake of this fluid causes the egg to not implant correctly in the uterus.

In some rare and isolated cases, the effect of cotton tea does not have the expected effect, increasing menstrual flow rather than decreasing it. If this happens, the use of tea should be stopped, and a doctor should be consulted.
