Verbena officinalis
Price: £1.95
Attractive to pollinators
A native wild flower with several stiffly erect, somewhat bristly, tough stems, and bearing in summer dense slender spikes of tiny, pale lilac flowers. The plant enjoyed a reputation as a herbal medicine, curing, amongst other ailments, yellow jaundice, dropsy, gout and piles. Mixed with vinegar, it was used as a cosmetic, presumably not as a deodorant. 2ft (60cm)
