What is Catuaba?

"Catuaba" is the name of an infusion made from the bark of several trees that grow in South America. The bark of the Trichilia catigua and Erythroxylum vaccinifolium trees is most often used, therefore the bark of these trees, as well as the trees themselves, are also called catuaba.

Catuaba is a small, fast-growing tree, whose flowers are orange and yellow and whose fruits are inedible. The Tupi Indians who discovered its effects have written countless songs of praise about Catuaba. The Tupi Indians of the rainforests of Brazil are believed to have been the first to prepare the stimulating and now very famous herb Catuaba. According to their folk medicine, catuaba is a valuable aphrodisiac. This herb is highly appreciated by women and men.

The herb contains a group of three alkaloids called catuabin. There are also tannins that affect the slightly bitter taste of catuaba and saponins. Catuaba also contains flavonoids that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that in turn help protect against oxidative stress, phytosterols that act in the same way as sex hormones and many essential oils.
