Bauhinia galpiniiis an evergreen scrambling shrub with a rather horizontal habit that grows as a dense mound.
If grown under trees it will climb up to 6 metres, and it can be trained up a trellis against a warm wall. When grown in full sun they tend to grow in a more scrambling mound.
The distinctive flowers have shell shaped petals in apricot and red and look a little like butterflies or orchids.
They normally flower in autumn but will bloom through to spring in the tropics.
Despite its scrambling growth habit it can be used as an informal hedge or around water features especially to give the garden tropical feel.
