Irish yew is a popular evergreen conifer. They are very practical due to many varieties available offering various shapes and sizes. Another advantage is that they grow well in both full sun and in deep shade.

Fastigiata has strictly upright, narrow habit. It grows very slowly which makes it suitable for small gardens, too. Until it reaches full maturity it seldom exceeds width of 1m. The height varies by location and soil fertility.

Needles are dark green, and bright green as they emerge. Branches are orangey brown. This variety is usually female producing red berries which are poisonous.

Yew can be pruned in spring or trimmed in late summer for hedges. It withstands hard pruning into old wood. They are tolerant of all soil types except boggy and wet. Fully hardy to min. -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
