ICC A117.1 DRAFT Open for Public Comment
The International Code Council's Committee on A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities has released the 2023 draft and opened it for public comment through July 31, 2023.
Many of you have expressed interests in accessibility standard development specific to unique features like:
· Adult Changing Stations (see section 616)
· Gates to Pools (see section 404.2.6.1 exception 2)
· Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (see section 503)
· Height requirements for automatic controls on bottle filling stations (see section 602.4.2)
· Pet Washing Stations (see section 617)
· Artificial turf in play areas (see section 1008.4.1.3.1)
Other issues addressed in the 2023 draft include:
· Whether diaper changing tables can be located in the accessible toilet compartment (hint - this version says "no.") (see section 603.5)
· Hmmm... you might also want to check out the proposed max height for the water closet seat (see section 604.4)
We've talked with many of you over the last three years about the use of mechanically adjustable adult changing tables in public parks. Our experience assessing these mechanical units has shown them to be broken, vandalized, or otherwise unusable within a year of installation at sites that are not supervised. Note this 2023 draft allows for a fixed bench exception (see 616.4.2) that might be more appropriate for public park restrooms that are unsupervised. Please consider submitting comments about whether this exception would work for your parks and facilities.
While the draft includes the full text, public comments are limited to the revised sections or items in the original proposals. Visit the ICC A117.1 web site for the public comment form and additional background information on this standard development process: https://lnkd.in/gJb4UV2c
