Asus VivoBook 17 (F712JA) review: Affordable 17-inch laptop with passive cooling
The VivoBook 17 belongs to Asus' entry-level series among the multimedia and office laptops. With its Ice Lake CPU and the label F712JA, it represents the successor to the VivoBook 17 F712FA equipped with Intel's Comet Lake processor. Our configuration corresponds to the highest equipment version from the manufacturer: 16 GB of RAM, a 512-GB PCIe-3.0 M.2 SSD, FHD IPS panel, and Intel Core-i7 processor. The price is about 799 Euros (~$843).
The most affordable configuration with an Intel Pentium Gold 7505, 8 GB of RAM, 256-GB SSD, and HD+ screen is available for half that price (399 Euros, ~$421). AMD versions with Ryzen 7 5700U (VivoBook S17 S712) or Ryzen 5 5500U (VivoBook 17 M712) are also available for 799 Euros (~$843), but they are much harder to find, since those are probably international versions - with the advantage that they also offer a keyboard illumination.
If you want to upgrade the RAM or install the OS yourself, you may also be able to find models with a Core-i5 CPU, 4 GB of RAM, and without the OS for about 200-300 Euros less (~$211-317) from time to time. There is also the VivoBook S17 with Tiger Lake processors that offers a battery with a 50% larger capacity (47 Wh). We compare the VivoBook 17 with the competitors: the HP Pavilion 17, the Lenovo V15, the Acer Aspire 5, and the Lenovo IdeaPad 3.

Case and Equipment: Asus laptop with USB-C and Wi-Fi 6
The matte silver case is made from plastic and can be easily warped. While this doesn't lead to any image distortions, there is some unpleasant creaking, even if you only hold up the laptop on one corner, which raises some questions about the quality. On the other hand, the hinges are tight and the display wobbles only slightly. This also means that the lid cannot be opened with one hand. The workmanship is otherwise free from flaws.
After taking off the bottom plate, which is easy despite there being many clamps, you can perform some maintenance: The RAM, M.2 PCIe-3.0 SSD, Wi-Fi module, and the small 32-Wh battery can be replaced and the fan can be cleaned. It is noticeable that the latter only provides fresh air to the case, so that the CPU itself is cooled (semi-)passively - more on that in the Performance section. There is a 2.5-inch HDD slot with a connection to the mainboard, but you will need the corresponding cable and insertion frame.
Most of the connections are on the right case side, so that any cables might get in the way of mouse operation. The left side houses the USB-2.0 ports, and the right side offers HDMI 1.4, a µSD card reader, 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbit/s), 1x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, and the audio combo port. Charging via USB-C is not supported.
Interestingly, we measure transfer rates of about 10 Gbit/s with the USB-C 3.2 Gen 1. With Intel's AX201, Wi-Fi 6 is onboard, and the transfer rates of about 1 Gbit/s are good but don't correspond to the potential of the module. The µSD card reader places in the middle of the test field with a slow 70 MB/s, while the 720p camera is abysmal.
Due to the small bezel on the bottom, the 17-inch laptop is not very deep, having the smallest footprint among the 17-inchers in our test field. However, at 406 mm (~16 in) it is also wider than many 17-inch gaming laptops with an ultra-slim frame. The weight of only 2.2 kg (~4.85 lb), which is extremely light for this device class, is only achieved by compromising with a low case stability, weak cooling system, and small battery.

Input Devices: Keyboard with weak feedback and no illumination
At 15 x 15 mm (~0.6 x 0.6 in), the keys are slightly small. They offer a short stroke (1.4 mm, ~0.06 in) and fairly indistinct feedback and are easy to trigger. At least, the pressure point is noticeable, which means that after a short time of familiarization, fast typing is also possible. The Enter and Space keys are of the rattling kind, and many keys are reduced in size.
The layout is otherwise good, but the gray labels on the silver keys make them very hard to read, unless the light conditions are ideal. In this model, the keys also are not illuminated and the same also goes for the European market in general. When applying some force, the keyboard can be pressed down, but this doesn't impact the typing experience.
The slightly small touchpad (10.5 x 7.4 mm, ~4.1 x 2.9 in) has good sliding characteristics. The integrated mouse keys have a short stroke and offer little resistance.
A sharp display for the Asus VivoBook 17
The Asus VivoBook 17 offers a 17.3-inch IPS display with a FHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). The only available alternative is an HD+ panel with outdated TN technology.
We already know the matte BOE NV173FHM-N49 panel from the predecessors, which is the reason why our measurements are very similar: with 263 nits it is now only 1 nit brighter than the VivoBook 17 F712FA. The competitors are brighter by about 20 to 40 nits. The contrast worsened from 1200:1 to 900:1. The IdeaPad 3, on the other hand, offers a contrast ratio of 1400:1, which is very good for IPS displays.
Subjectively, the display is sharp and clear, since most of the time you won't sit as close to such a large laptop as you would to a 13-inch laptop. The clearly illuminated subpixels also contribute to the quality of the image output.
However, there are still some visible faults in the brightness distribution that will be noticeable in dark film or game scenes. On the other hand, we didn't see an PWM flickering. In our comparison, the best response time for gaming is delivered by the Acer Aspire 5 with dGPU.

The matte panel benefits when using the VivoBook 17 outdoors, but the low brightness of 263 nits is insufficient to also allow working in sunny spaces. As typical for IPS displays, the viewing angles are at a high level.
Performance: Intel Ice Lake CPU with semi-passive cooling
A typical usage scenario for the Asus VivoBook 17 is using it as a multimedia and office laptop at the desk at home. Our configuration with an Intel Core i7-1065G7, 16 GB of dual-channel RAM, Intel's Ice Lake iGPU, and a 512-GB SSD is sufficient for these tasks. Older games can run at low detail settings.
Additional models come with a Core i5 CPU or AMD Ryzen-5000 (international market). A successor with a Core i7-1165G7 is also available.
Processor
The Intel Core i7-1065G7 with four cores is generally sufficient for office and Internet tasks.
In the 30-minute Cinebench-R15 loop, the CPU initially starts with everything it's got (3.5 GHz). After one minute, the clock speed drops to 2.3 GHz and is maintained at that level, even if the CPU performs some short boosts from time to time. In the beginning, the power consumption is 31 watts. It is 15 watts on average, which corresponds to the performance limit adjustment by Asus.
After briefly rising to 90 °C (194 °F), the core temperatures remain constant at 85 °C (185 °F). The reason for the relatively high temperatures in such a large case at a consumption of only 15 watts can be found in the passively cooled CPU, while the fans only provide cool air to the case.
The limitation to 15 watts leads to the reduction of points in Cinebench R15 from 580 in the beginning to 490 from the third run and finally to a constant 475 points. The fan doesn't start immediately, since it is probably controlled more by the case temperature inside, instead of the CPU temperatures. The fan only revs up after one minute, after the CPU is already throttled from 25 down to 15 watts.
The result is that a Core i3 is only surpassed by little, while even the predecessor performed around 30% faster and a corresponding Tiger Lake-CPU is 60% faster. A Ryzen 7 5700U with eight cores should offer at least three times the performance. In battery operation, the performance is reduced by about 10%, since the CPU performance limit drops to a maximum of 10 watts in terms of the consumption.

DPC Latencies
According to LatencyMon, the delay of inputs is high, and the system is therefore not suited for real-time processing of audio and video. The responsibility for this lies with the device kernel mode driver from Windows.
4K videos are reproduced on YouTube with a medium CPU load of 25% and a GPU load of 46% without dropping any single frames.

Storage Solution
The speeds of the 512 GB M.2-2280 NVMe SSD remain even below PCIe-3.0 level. You can upgrade to a hard drive that is twice as fast.
The competitors and the predecessor offer similar transfer rates. The 2.5-inch HDD slot can be used with a corresponding cable and insertion frame.

Graphics Card
The integrated Intel Ice Lake GPU can be used for older games at low detail settings. At least, the Intel HD 620 of the predecessor can be surpassed by about 60%. AMD's Vega iGPU in the corresponding Ryzen 5000 models or the Nvidia GeForce MX350 in the Acer Aspire 5 are more suitable.
While gaming, the GPU has a clock speed of 900 MHz and the CPU, of 1400 MHz. In battery operation, the performance drops by about 10%.

Emissions: A quiet multimedia laptop from Asus
Noise Emissions
In battery operation, the case fan remains mostly turned off, and even under full load, it is hardly audible.
In mains operation, it also whirrs along during idle operation, even if it is hardly noticeable. Under full load, it takes one minute before it gets going. But even then, the noise level remains within limits, so that quiet working is ensured. The comparison devices were similarly quiet or even quieter.
However, the semi-passive cooling system requires more material (copper) than other cooling systems where the fan is completely integrated. This also leads to a higher weight and to a performance that remains below the potential offered by the CPU and large case.

Temperatures
The temperatures of the Asus VivoBook 17 remain completely inconspicuous. Even under maximum load, there is no noticeable hot spot in any place of the case. The competitors show temperatures that generally remain similarly low.
In the stress test (Prime95), the CPU frequencies drop from 2.7 GHz to 1.7 GHz after 2 minutes. With this, they don't fall below the basic clock speed of 1.3 GHz. The behavior of the TDP and core temperatures is equivalent to the CPU benchmark loop.
During the combined stress test (Prime95 + FurMark), the clock speeds of the CPU and iGPU drop to only 800 MHz and about 600 MHz respectively. In battery operation, it is only 700 and 400 MHz respectively, while the core temperatures are only 66 °C (151 °F) during that time and the fan remains quiet.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40.2 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 36.9 °C / 98 F, ranging from 21.1 to 71 °C for the class Multimedia.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 47.9 °C / 118 F, compared to the average of 39.1 °C / 102 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.7 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 31.2 °C / 88 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28.4 °C / 83.1 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.8 °C / 83.8 F (+0.4 °C / 0.7 F).

Speakers
The speakers point toward the bottom and can get sufficiently loud. There are also some hints at bass. Since the mids and highs are well-pronounced, the device is suited for multimedia. Our comparison field turns out worse.

Power Management: The small battery in the Asus is only frugal in the weight
Power Consumption
The standby consumption of just below 0.5 watts ranges in the middle of the field, but due to the small 32-Wh battery, things can become tight after a week in standby. The power used during idle operation on average also falls within the middle range at less than 8 watts without showing anything conspicuous.
Under load, the maximum drawn from the outlet is 44 watts, but this only happens at the beginning of the combined stress test. In this extreme scenario, the average is 30 to 35 watts, in the pure CPU-related full load scenario it is about 25 watts, and while gaming, 29 watts. This is efficient, even if the offered performance turns out correspondingly lower.
The included 45-watt power supply is sufficiently large.

Battery Life
The small 32-Wh battery lasts barely 4 1/2 hours in the WLAN test at 150 nits of brightness in Balanced power mode. Under full load, it can last for 1:40 hours due to the CPU being limited to 10 watts in battery operation.
The predecessor lasts for an hour longer and most of the competitors even twice as long. The AMD version has a larger 47-Wh battery and should deliver significantly better results overall.

Pros
Cons
Verdict: Asus VivoBook 17 with powerful competitors
On one hand, you get a really quiet and cool work device with a good system performance, many connections, good maintenance options, speakers acceptable for multimedia enjoyment, and a sharp and clear matte FHD IPS display with the Asus VivoBook 17 (F712JA).
In addition, the most affordable configuration with an Intel Core i3 and HD+ display already starts from 399 Euros (~$421), while the highest equipment configuration of our test unit is currently available for 729 Euros (~$769).
On the other hand, the USB-C port lacks Power Delivery and DisplayPort, and the display, a higher brightness and better color space coverage. The small battery with a runtime of less than 4:22 hours is also only suitable for those who hardly use the device away from the desk, and to use the keyboard and read the key labels, you need the best light conditions. It would also be beneficial to connect the case fan directly to the CPU via heat pipe to allow for a higher TDP. Two of the three USB ports also only use the slower 2.0 standard.
The Asus VivoBook 17 convinces with a matte, sharp display, a good system performance, and a cool and quiet office operation. The compromises lie mainly in the battery life and keyboard.
However, the performance and brightness are sufficient for simple office and multimedia tasks indoors. For those who can live with the above-mentioned disadvantages - including the slightly cheap case - and can find it at a good price, the VivoBook should be sufficient.
For all other users, the HP 17 offers the better keyboard and a powerful Ryzen 7 5700U with Vega graphics (current model). And while the Acer Aspire 5 offers an illuminated keyboard, Ethernet, a metal case, and a better battery life, the true winner in our competition is the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17: It brings a bright, and contrast-rich display with a touch option and FreeSync, a very good keyboard, an excellent battery life, and a powerful Ryzen-CPU. 699 Euros (~$738) for the AMD version and 599 Euros (~$632) for the Intel version are prices without equal.
Price and Availability
An Intel version of the VivoBook with the label K712EA with 16 GB of RAM, a 1-TB SSD, Intel Core-i7 11th gen CPU, FHD display, and Windows 10 Home is shown on Amazon as currently unavailable, while the Ryzen 5 version costs $730.
