A pretty, medium-sized conifer rarely to 30 m tall, widely distributed and commonly seen from central to eastern Canada and scattered south to Virginia in the U.S.A. It forms a narrowly conical, densely branched crown with short, narrow but blunt leaves that are dark glossy green above and pale to bluish below. The attractive female cones are bluish gray to purplish. Apart from an important forestry tree it is probably the most popular species sold as a Christmas tree in Canada and the U.S. It is also one of the worlds hardiest trees, reportedly even surviving immersion in liquid nitrogen at nearly -200°C. Abies balsamea grows easily from seed. Cold stratification for 30 days after sowing will optimize results.
