A large and robust, bushy annual herb or short-lived shrub to about 150 cm tall with thick stems, large, lobed leaves and large, trumpet-shaped white to purplish flowers that appear throughout the growing season. The flowers are pleasantly fragrant and open at night. They are are followed by spiny, egg-shaped fruits that split at the top to release many black seeds. All parts of the plant are poisonous. It has hallucinogenic properties and has been extensively used in traditional medicine and spiritualism. Datura stramonium is also popular as an ornamental but can become an invasive weed in the right environment.
