Originally native to northeastern Trop. Africa, but widely cultivated as an ornamental and naturalised elsewhere, the Castor Oil Plant grows into a large shrub or smallish tree to 12 m tall with deeply lobed, palmate foliage and spiny fruits with poisonous seeds, from which oil is extracted. Ricinus communis "Carmencita" is a most attractive cultivar with maroon to purplish foliage and bright red fruits. It is best suited to warm temperate and tropical regions but often grown in colder areas as an annual plant.
