Introduction

The discovering of the most medicinal plants is very old and many of the
plants references don`t mention the time or even the person who discover
the plants or the effective material , santonica flower , in the very old past
known as 'wormwood' due to in the past it was used as treatment of
intestinal anthelmintic , febrifuge , stomachic anti-septic and control or
alleviate the symptoms of the chronic fever.
Now days santonica flower is less used in pharmaceuticals and even the
traditional medicine and replaced by other active species in the same
family .
Santonica flower origin :
Santonica flower is the common name of the dried flower-head of
Artemisia cina , famiy : Asteraceae or Compositae.
Morphology :
Colour: greenish – yellow. Shape: ovoid.
Surface : it is hairy almost and shining at the top of the flower .

Active constituents :
1- santonin : witch have the concentration in the flower from 2% to
3.5% and have the following structure :
2- volatile oil : and have the concentration 2% , witch composed from
the following volatile oils :

A-Terpinole : it can be used in pharmaceuticals products as (alpha-


terpinole) and have strong and functional antimicrobial activity to kill
cariogenic and periodontopathic bacteria .

B- Pinene : usually used in insecticides and mainly found in cannabis


plants and pine trees .

C_ Cineole: it is widely used in respiratory medications to treat


respiratory tracts and asthma .

D-- Terpinene
Chemical test :
In order to determine the sntonica flower powder there is more than one
chemical test but the most common test is :

Kaselbach test :
First step is to use 0.5 g of santonica powder by extraction and shake with
benzene , second step is filtering in the aporcelain dish and evaporate
until the dryness

Third step is to add potassium methoxide reagent ( 2_3 drops)
