Kirsten Dunst’s Vulnerable New Interview Reveals the ‘Hardest’ Thing About Motherhood: ‘I Have Nothing For Myself’

Kirsten Dunst is tired. She has two young kids at home, sons Ennis, 5, and James, 2, and they are a lot. (I would know, I have my own boys at those ages, plus a 6-year-old.) While the day-to-day is challenging — lack of sleep, endless busyness — she shared the “hardest thing” about motherhood in a vulnerable new interview, and it’s honestly so true.

The Bring It On alum was the cover star of Marie Claire’s The Makers Issue, which was published online today. This was her first interview in two years, which she says is because “I haven’t worked in two years.”

“Every role I was being offered was the sad mom,” she admitted, so she decided to just stay home instead.

Losing Herself

“To be honest, that’s been hard for me … because I need to feed myself,” she said about not working in two years. Dunst then shared the thing she finds most difficult about motherhood. “The hardest thing is being a mom and … not feeling like, I have nothing for myself,” she told the outlet. “That’s every mother—not just me.”

Hearing that is like a punch to the gut. Moms are people too — and we absolutely need things for ourselves. We need something outside of motherhood to feel fulfilled and valuable, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Good for her for not allowing herself to be forced into these sad roles that she doesn’t want to do!

Dunst, who is starring in the upcoming “elevated action” film, Civil War, shared other tidbits about her life with husband Jesse Plemons and their kids. For example, her 2-year-old snuggling in bed with her in the middle of the night and breathing on her with his “stinky breath,” and her eldest son “eating three lollipops at once” and being obsessed with YouTube. “He discovered Weird Mario on YouTube,” she says. Now, I’m going to have to search this for my own boys to watch.

“I’m, like, a Volvo soccer mom right now,” she quips.

Spider-Man Love

Her kids have also inherited her love of movies. She shared that James watches her as Mary Jane in the Spider-Man series. “It’s cute,” she says.

James must have watched Spider-Man recently, because the Interview With a Vampire star shared a rare photo of him back in Sept. 2023 before he knew his mom starred in it. “Has no clue his mom was MJ 📷 Jesse,” she captioned a cute photo of her toddler with a red Spider-Man umbrella. He couldn’t be cuter!

Dunst also takes her kids to the movie theater. “I have to go and see the Paw Patrol movie” she says about how she spends her spare time. Like everything else Dunst has shared, this is so, so relatable.
