Take a Peek at the Menu for Ammazza, Reopening Today on Edgewood

It’s back. Neapolitan pizzeria Ammazza reopens today at 5 p.m. on Edgewood Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward. The restaurant closed nearly two years ago, following two car accidents which caused extensive damage to the building.

Owner Hugh Connerty made a few improvements to Ammazza during the 100-year-old building’s reconstruction. He doubled the kitchen space to include the entire front of the building, added two more Acunto pizza ovens, and expanded the dough room, where executive chef Sean Dwyer makes the restaurant’s new pastas for the menu.

Diners now enter Ammazza through the left side of the restaurant and order next door. Connerty says the dining room remains mostly unchanged, and he’s working on converting the double-level loading dock into a porch to open later this spring.

Both Edgewood and the newly-opened Decatur restaurants carry similar menus and include popular pizzas such as the Inferno with Calabria peppers and spicy soppressata, a selection of white and pesto pies, two vegan options, and the kid-friendly glitter pizza.

Ammazza-Edgewood plans to offer weekly specials on the menu sometime this spring.

Ammazza lies just beyond the traffic light at Randolph Street and Edgewood Avenue. The first car caused the majority of the damage to the building, slamming into the front of restaurant where diners once placed their pizza orders and hitting a water main. The pipe burst beneath the floor. Nearly 500,000 gallons of water gushed into and underneath the restaurant for three hours, severely eroding the soil beneath the foundation.

Connerty’s advice to all headed to Ammazza’s reopening, “drive cautiously.”
