Neapolitan-Style Pizzeria Ammazza Closes in Decatur

The Decatur location of Ammazza permanently closed after nearly two years across from Kimball House on East Howard Avenue

The Decatur location of Neapolitan-style pizzeria Ammazza permanently closed after nearly two years across from Kimball House on East Howard Avenue. An announcement was posted to Instagram over the weekend, but did not provide details on what lead to the closure.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the permanent closure of our Decatur location,” the post reads. “We will continue serving the community through Ammazza Edgewood.”

Brothers Hugh and Jason Connerty opened Ammazza eight years ago on Edgewood Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward. The pizzeria quickly amassed a following for its crispy, thin-crust pies baked in two 8,000-pound Acunto pizza ovens. Since its opening in 2012, Ammazza has survived the year-long closure of the Edgewood Avenue bridge, the construction of the Atlanta streetcar rail system to the west, and Google tearing up surrounding streets to lay fiber in the neighborhood.

Then, in the summer of 2017, Ammazza sustained major damage from two separate cars plowing into the 100-year-old building at Edgewood and Randolph. The first car accident caused a water main to burst, which severely eroded the soil beneath the foundation of the restaurant and forced Ammazza to close for 22 months. The Edgewood Avenue location finally reopened last March, following extensive reconstruction and repairs to shore up the building and foundation. During the last few months of the closure, Ammazza opened in Decatur on East Howard Avenue.

Ammazza Decatur temporarily closed in March at the start of the pandemic and reopened two months later for takeout and seating on its patio. The Edgewood Avenue pizzeria continues to remain open in the Old Fourth Ward for takeout and outdoor seating.

Eater reached out to Connerty Sunday for comment on the closure of Ammazza Decatur.
