ENCINO – In the modern era of amateur athletics, transfers has become part of the culture. Student-athletes move from one high school to another. Every week there’s news of a collegiate athlete entering the transfer portal.
It’s prominent in basketball and football. But you could say it’s rampant when it comes to quarterbacks, which many consider to be the most high-profile position in all of sports. It comes with the glamor, the responsibility, and sometimes, the fame. It also explains why quarterbacks leave a program when they’re not named the starter. It happens too often.
That’s not what’s happening at Crespi. In fact, what’s happening in Encino is a rarity nowadays. Quarterback Sloan Senofsky and Zachary Siskowic share the position. It’s got the Celts 2-0 after Saturday night’s 42-28 win over Westlake High at home.
“I’m controlling what I can control. I can’t control who the coaches decide to play, or not play,” Senofsky said. “But I can show that I deserve to be on the field.”
Senofsky scored three touchdowns, throwing two to Holden Gering, and rushing for a third.
“Every time (Senofsky) goes out on the field I want to support him 100%,” Siskowic said. “Team success is success for us as well.”
Siskowic rushed for two touchdowns. His first was a 14-yard score and the second on a 7-yard scamper.
Senofsky, a senior, and Siskowic, a junior, are transfers themselves. Senofksy from Palisades Charter and Siskowic from cross-town rival Notre Dame. But to stay and share the position is even more rare.
Ryan Staub – now at West Ranch – and Amari Powell, who transferred to Oaks Christian last year – both left Sierra Canyon once a starting quarterback was named. Tyler Voss transferred from Chaminade and Oak Christian until landing at Valencia High.
“When there are multiple players that we feel we can win with at the same position it becomes a competition,” Crespi coach Dameon Porter said. “They have to accept that.”
The concept of inter-squad competition tells Porter the program is moving in the right direction. When Porter took over at Crespi, the Celts were coming off a 1-9 season.
“When I first got here there weren’t enough quarterbacks, that was a different problem,” Porter said laughing.
Crespi, ranked No. 6 in the most recent Daily News rankings, will begin league play next week at home against St. Paul on Saturday, April 3. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
