Kung fu, a flower-bedecked van, Mad magazine, a Slip ‘n’ Slide, a sissy bar and a Pet Rock. Welcome (back) to the 1970s — and the Me Decade is the perfect place for a self-focused young wannabe supervillain.
Here is the first full trailer for Minions: The Rise of Gru, the bitchin’ sequel to the spinoff of the humongously successful Despicable Me franchise. Check it out above.
Starring Steve Carell as the impressionable and learning-to-be-evil 12-year-old Gru, the pic from Illumination Entertainment takes us back to the days of feathered hair and flared jeans. Here’s what to expect: Gru is a suburban fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6 and hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto — a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please — deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions.
When the Vicious 6 ousts its leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. But it doesn’t go well and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, he will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
The voice cast also includes Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews.
Kyle Balda directs The Rise of Gru, with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val serving as co-directors. Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud are the producers.
Universal opens the toon on July 3. Groove to the dy-no-mite trailer above and dig the key art below:
